Metelen is a city in Münsterland.
background
In 889 AD Metelen Abbey was founded. This was initially under the control of the emperor, but was converted into a free world convent in the 15th century. A small place was built around the monastery, which was surrounded by a protective wall with four gates in the 16th century. In the 18th century the textile industry found its way into Metelen, which shaped the place until 1973. In the 1970s tourism replaced the textile industry as the town's main source of income. The central element here was the bird park founded in the Metelener Heide in 1972. This developed into a national crowd puller. But even this got financial problems at the beginning of 2000, was closed several times and reopened by new operators. There has been no zoo or bird park here since 2011.

By train
Metelen train station 1 Metelen station is just outside and on the railway line from Enschede to Muenster. There are also connections to national travel destinations here.
By bus
On school days, there is a bus route from Burgsteinfurt to Metelen, a bus route to Ochtrup, a collective call taxi to Heek and a single trip to Rheine and back.
During the school holidays, a shared call taxi runs from Burgsteinfurt via Metelen to Heek, and a shared call taxi to Ochtrup at lunchtime.

- 1 St. Cornelius and Cyprian - The former collegiate church dates back to the 12th century. Numerous elements such as a baptismal font or an almost life-size crucifix date from the early years of the church.
- 2 Metelen Land Railway Museum, Naendorf 74, 48629 Metelen, Germany.
On display in the old station building are a collection of uniforms and hats, the fully functional mechanical signal box of the station, a ticket printer, a bathroom scale with card output, a model railway system and a local and remote barrier. A self-made hand-lever trolley can be moved on an approximately 100-meter-long inspection track with a switch. A salon wagon, workshop wagons and track construction equipment as well as an industrial diesel locomotive are shown in the outdoor area.Open: from May to October every first Sunday.Price: € 1.50 per person.
- 3 Mill Museum - In the old Stiftsmühle (Plagemanns Mühle) there has been a restored turbine-driven system that can be visited since 1984.
