Enschede is a dutch City in the province Overijssel and the region Twente.

  • Enschede is a large city in the east of the Netherlands right on the border with Germany. It is particularly popular as a shopping city and has a large cross-border catchment area.

By plane

  • At the local airport Enschede Airport Twente (IATA code ENS), a military airport that was closed on January 1, 2008, is currently (as of autumn 2017) no scheduled flight operations.
  • The closest airport with regular service is 70 km away Munster Osnabrück Airport (FMO). It takes about 2: 15–2½ hours by bus and train (change in Osnabrück and Hengelo or in Münster), and a good hour by car.
  • The Dusseldorf Airport (DUS) is approx. 135 km away. It takes almost three hours by train (change in Dülmen), but only about 1½ hours by car.
  • It is further away, but better connected Amsterdam Airport Schiphol (AMS), 170 km from Enschede. By train you only need a little over two hours, a continuous Intercity runs from the airport train station directly to Enschede (or vice versa) once an hour.

By train

  • Enschede is coming from Germany by the regional train lines 64 (MuensterSteinfurtGronau–Enschede) and 51 (DortmundCoesfeld–Gronau – Enschede). These lines run every hour every day. Due to the applicable transitional tariff, traveling to Enschede is also possible with the Schöne-Tag-NRW-Ticket and the Schöne-Fahrt-NRW-Ticket as well as the Quer-durch-Land-Ticket and the Schöne-Wochenender ticket. For domestic journeys on the section between Glanerbrug and Enschede in the Netherlands, the tariff of the Nederlandse Spoorwegen (NS) applies.
  • There are also three other train stations in Enschede, but outside the center, Enschede-Drienerlo, Enschede-Glanerbrug and Enschede-De-Eschmarke.
  • There are direct connections from / to long-distance transport within the Netherlands Amsterdam (Travel time 2 hours), The hague (2:20 hours) and Rotterdam above Deventer; in local transport Zwolle approached.
  • Further connections lead to the neighboring city Hengelo, including connections from Germany.

The market in the city center (Hendrik Jan van Heekplein Square), especially on Saturdays, is diverse and worth a stroll. In particular the fish stalls. Those who buy a lot, however, have the logistical problem that the car is usually not very close and the bags are heavy.

  • Hengelo (8 km northwest; 7-9 minutes by train)
  • In the German-Dutch neighboring communities Losser and Gronau (10–12 km to the east; 11 minutes by train) a North Rhine-Westphalian state horticultural show took place; some attractions have been preserved in both parishes. The "Museum of Rock Music" is now located in Gronau, and Udo Lindenberg is heavily involved in the concept
  • In Oldenzaal (11 km north; 23 minutes by bus 62) the late Romanesque Sint-Plechelmuskerk with its impressive interior and a baroque pulpit is worth a visit.
  • 2  Museum Buurtspoorweg, Haaksbergen-Boekelo (15 km southeast of Enschede; Bus 62 to Haaksbergen, Lansinkstraat). It runs between Haaksbergen and Boekelo (7km) up to four times on the open days. Great fun for families. You can climb into the locomotive and marvel at the fire in the boiler or spend the journey on the intermediate pieces of the wagons. Twickel Castle
  • The gardens of Twickel Castle in Ambt Delden, around 15 km northeast near the A35 motorway (afrit 28), open April - October Wed-Sun 10:00 am - 5:00 pm, admission 5.00 EUR. The castle, originally from 1347, has a Renaissance facade from 1551. It is inhabited and normally cannot be visited.

  • Ahaus (19 km southwest; 35 minutes by train)
  • Castle Singraven (25 km north) is a 17th century castle in a park on the Dinkel river west of Denekamp in the municipality of Dinkelland around 20 km north of Enschede. In the complex there is a water mill (restaurant) and a former flour mill. In Denekamp there is also the natural history museum Natura docet.
  • In Ootmarsum (Parish of Dinkelland; 26 km north) the church of St. Simon and Juda, a late Romanesque-early Gothic hall church, as well as the open-air museum are worthwhile Los Hues.
