Arnhem (Dutch name: Arnhem) is the capital of the province Gelderland. The city is on Rhine (Neder-Rijn) and is located in the east of the country.

Map of Arnhem

background

Arnhem was originally not on the banks of the Rhine, but on the higher lying Sint-Jansbeek. The settlement arose at a point where the road forked between Nijmegen (German: Nijmegen) and Utrecht / Zutphen. The town was granted town charter in 1233 by Count Otto von Geldern.

The city first became the capital of Geldern in 1579 when it established itself as the capital of the Kwartier van Veluwe joined the Union of Utrecht in the district of Geldern. In 1585 Arnhem joined the Republic of the Seven United Netherlands as the capital of the district of Geldern, and in 1817 Arnhem became the capital of the province of Gelderland in the United Kingdom of the Netherlands.

During the second half of the 19th and 20th centuries, Arnhem was greatly expanded. The city suffered a major setback when it became the scene of one of the last Allied defeats during World War II. At the Battle of Arnhem Bridge in September 1944, Montgomery's bold plan, known as Operation Market Garden, failed. Because the last bridge, that of Arnhem, could not be taken. And the plan to cross the Rhine with the help of parachute troops failed. An artillery gun near the bridge, which is now called the John Frost Bridge, still reminds of this today. When the Germans evacuated the city in 1944, Arnhem was also looted by the occupying forces.

This destruction means that the city center of Arnhem does not have many towering buildings. But outside the city center there are many well-preserved districts from the 19th century, some of which are quite beautiful Art Nouveau buildings.

Trolleybus in Arnhem

Arnhem is known for its trolleybus network, which replaced the destroyed tram network after the Second World War. The most important inner-city lines are served by the trolleybus (ndl: Trolleybus) served. The bus station is located at the front of the train station, which is currently under construction. The regional buses that connect Arnhem with the surrounding area and all of the larger cities in the region, however, run "normally" with diesel.

In addition to the bus service, Arnhem has four train stations: Arnhem Centrum, Arnhem Velperpoort on the east side of the center, Arnhem Presikhaaf on the route to Zutphen and Arnhem Zuid on the opposite side of the Rhine.
