Local public transport

Oberhausen has a well-developed public transport network, which is operated by the STOAG (Stadtwerke Oberhausen) is operated. The main line runs over a high-speed route for buses and trams built in 1996, which extends from the main station via the Neue Mitte (CentrO) to the Sterkrader train station. Connections are best determined on the Internet, and tickets should ideally be purchased before you start your journey. Tickets are available from ticket machines located at the main station and at the tram stops. In addition, many kiosks and some shops sell tickets, recognizable by the VRR logo on the shop. You can also buy tickets from the bus driver, but not in the trams. Individual tickets that are bought from the bus driver usually no longer have to be validated.

Which price level is required can be seen at each stop or on the Internet. You can enter your destination at the machine and the appropriate price level is displayed. The bus drivers can also issue a suitable ticket.

At the main train station, at the Sterkrad train station and at the bus stop new middle at the CentrO there is a STOAG information center, where tickets are also available.

If you have tickets that have to be validated, this is possible in the vehicles. The ticket validators are usually located directly at the entrances. At the bus stop new middle There are also validators, but not at other stops.

As everywhere in the VRR area, entry into the buses is at the front of the driver, where you also have to show a ticket that has already been purchased. Chip tickets have to be checked for validity at a control device.

You should find out about the conditions of carriage on the STOAG website so that there are no problems.

You can also order a taxi from the bus driver. But the taxi costs extra.

Tips for teachers with school classes: At the CentrO, the buses are often checked, as many people get on there and some try to drive without a valid ticket. It is therefore very important that a valid ticket is available for everyone. It is best to validate the tickets at the validators at the bus stop. There are several there. Almost every minute there is a means of transport from the CentrO to the main station, so you don't have to take the next means of transport and you can take the time to validate all tickets if necessary. If there is not enough space left in one mode of transport, it might be better to wait for the next mode of transport. There should be a means of transport to the main station about every minute. If students get on a means of transport when they are not supposed to, go to the driver immediately and inform him so that the students are asked to get off.

By bicycle

In Oberhausen you can go well by bike. In some cases, cyclists are guided along the streets. You have to be careful here, as the motorists usually drive right past the cyclists without maintaining the prescribed safety distance of 1.5 m. Some one-way streets are open to bicycles in both directions. This can be seen on the corresponding signs.

In the whole Ruhr area you can find out about Metropolrad Ruhr Rent bicycles. To do this, you have to register online and deposit a credit: https://metropolradruhr.de./de/

You can take bicycles with you on buses for a surcharge (Mon-Fri from 9:00 a.m., Sat & Sun all day). However, this is not always recommended during the day, as there is usually too little space on the heavily frequented routes. Cyclists compete with prams, wheelchairs, walkers, etc. This is no problem by train from Oberhausen Hbf to Sterkrade station or Holten station.

Important: Neither the outside ascent via the 592 steps nor visiting the café or museum shop, both of which are inside, is possible without admission. The exhibitions are always worthwhile, the access to the roof is possible inside with a panoramic elevator (the last two floors are then stairs) and note the following: The interior is pleasantly cool in summer and not heated in winter.

For those who are on the nearby A 42 “Just” drives past, a few facts about this landmark: It is a dry gas container with a pane, built between 1927 and 1929 for 1.74 million Reichsmarks (around € 7 million), which initially stores the top-of-the-range gases from the GuteHoffnungsHütte (this is where the CentrO), and later the coke oven gases from the Osterfeld coking plant. Bombed in World War II and later burned out during repair work, it was rebuilt in 1949 and was in operation until 1988. After renovation, exhibitions have been shown there since 1994, which look particularly good in front of the industrial backdrop. The huge interior was already an installation location for a wall made of oil barrels, the moon or a jungle tree. From the viewing platform you have a good overview of Oberhausen and the entire western Ruhr area. The gasometer is a monument to the Industrial Heritage Route and the European Route of Industrial Heritage.
Dimensions: height 117.5 m, diameter 67.6 m, 24-sided with 8.80 m edge length, floor area 3,000 m², maximum usable volume 347,000 m³. The disc still in place weighs 600 t.

It should be noted that this leads to restrictions due to road closures during this time as well as the week before (construction) and after (dismantling). Local public transport is also affected by this: some buses have to take detours and some stops cannot be approached at all. Here you should inform yourself in good time on the website of the Corpus Christi fair, the city and the STOAG.

  • 17  Bahnhofstrasse, Bahnhofstrasse, 46145 Oberhausen. Due to the earlier structure of the city with the merger of Sterkrade, Osterfeld and Alt-Oberhausen, Sterkrade has its own extensive pedestrian zone. At one end you will find the Sterkrader Tor retail park.

  • 2  CentrO, Centroallee 1000, 46047 Oberhausen, Germany. CentrO in the encyclopedia WikipediaCentrO in the media directory Wikimedia CommonsCentrO (Q153458) in the Wikidata database.Perhaps the best-known and largest shopping center in Germany is about three kilometers north of the main train station. Due to the urban development, the actual city center of Oberhausen is now here, the new middle. In the beginning, the operator wanted to establish the Italian-influenced pronunciation “Tschentro”, but now people generally only say “Zentro”. It consists of a slightly curved, long corridor on two floors and a promenade on one side with better restaurants. At one end is the Coca-Cola oasis with numerous snacks and system catering. In the middle of CentrO After an extension there is a relatively short side corridor with more shops. You can't actually get lost in the CentrO. The anchor tenants are Kaufhof, C&A, Sinn & Leffers and Peek & Cloppenburg. The focus of the CentrO is on lifestyle and fashion, especially young fashion, the price level is relatively high. However, there are a number of other industries that do not exist for this at all. Supermarkets B. is only available in the area. The marketing is also clearly aimed at day tourists from the wider area, for example from neighboring ones Netherlands. Tip: There are few stairs or elevators inside CentrOSo if you want to change to another level and see an escalator, you should also use it, otherwise you might walk a bit until the next one comes. (Rolling) stairs and elevators are also shown on the site plans, which are located in many places.

Vodafone, O₂ and Telekom offer at least one HSDPA / HSPA data connection throughout the city. Some Internet cafés still exist, but are disappearing from year to year. There is also an inexpensive internet café at the main train station. There are free WiFi hotspots for one hour in the McDonald’s branches and in the main train station. So if you urgently need internet access, you should be able to get it in Oberhausen.
