Attention: The cross is not a complete cloverleaf, if you come from the A 42 and want to "turn around" you have to either drive the main road to the traffic lights and turn there (one way 2km) or drive a bit on the A 57 north (1km) and go back at junction 8 "Kamp-Lintfort".
The latter is also the fastest way to get to the Pattberg dump, which is located directly on the cross (see also the next exit).
km 4.0 - 2 Moers-North
The descent leads on highway 137, the north to Rheinberg and south to Moers leads (there is a 1 Westphalia gas station.
There are two heaps near the exit:

km 7.0 - 3 Duisburg-Baerl
The exit just before the Rhine bridge leads to Landstrasse 287, which is further south-east Duisburg-Homberg and over the Friedrich-Ebert-Brücke to Ruhrort. There is a small one right at the descent 1 Parking lot on Rheindeichstraße (before the railway bridge), from where it is only a 250m walk to the Rhine.
To the north, follow the L475 Duisburg-Baerl and further on Qrsoywhere there is a ferry across the Rhine to Duisburg-Walsum there.
Both alternatives of crossing the Rhine are only for people who have the time! South via Ruhrort you can get back on the A 59 and A 42 relatively quickly, but you have to factor in lost time due to heavy city traffic (at least 20 minutes). To the north via Orsay-Walsum there is also the ferry and waiting time (at least 40 minutes). If the motorway bridge is closed, it is advisable to use the A 40 to the south (and its Rhine bridge) anyway.
km 7.7 - 
Beeckerwerther Rhine Bridge
The Beeckerwerther Rhine Bridge is a total of 1030m long, the longest span is 310m over the Rhine. There are three lanes on each side of the road, and on the north side there is also a bicycle / footpath separated by a fence. It was completed in 1990 with construction costs of 134 million DM. km 16.1 - 7 Duisburg-Neumühl 
Directly after the Duisburg-Nord junction you can already see the windmill and the blast furnaces from LaPaDu, at exit 7 you can drive there, distance to the main parking lot about 1.5 km. Oberhausen
km 17.6 - 8 cross Oberhausen-West

km 19.5 - 9 Oberhausen-Buschhausen
The exit leads to the four-lane country road 215 (Buschhausener Straße) with Oberhausen industrial areas on both sides. The country road leads north to Buschhausen and south to downtown Oberhausen.
Particularly noticeable are the tall, blue and yellow painted buildings and the chimney of the GMVA (Community waste incineration plant of the cities of Duisburg and Oberhausen as well as the Remondis company) on the other side of the Rhine-Herne Canal.
The motorway will run for a longer stretch parallel to the canal and the Emscher. This is also due to its construction, it was laid out in the little developed Emschertrasse.
km 20.3 - Emscher Bridge
Here the motorway crosses the Emscher, the area before and after it is built on stilts over the Emschertal for around 2,500m.
At this point makes the narrow, diked Emscher a clear bend to the north, which was created artificially. Originally the Emscher bent westwards here to flow into the Rhine at Alsum. km 17.6 - 10 cross Oberhausen-Center
The exit leads to the federal road 223, which merges very quickly into the motorway 516 in the north. After the two runs Oberhausen-Grafenbusch (after 200 meters) and -Eisenheim (another 250m) you are on the A 516 (250m), which is a short 5km connection to the A 2 represents at the cross Oberhausen. km 28.5 - "Industrial culture tetrahedron"
The Tetrahedron on the Halde Beckstrasse in Bottrop is a walk-in sculpture in the shape of a tetrahedron, on the U-board it is shown as a seemingly floating triangle above the plateau of the heap. The writing "Industriekultur" on the U-plate indicates that the landmark is for Industrial Heritage Route belongs. You can approach it via exit 12 Bottrop-South or 13 Essen-Nord.
km 29.0 - Canal bridge
Almost 500m long, over the Rhine-Herne Canal, two distinctive, red arches.
Before and after the bridge there are heaps of coal on both sides, which are temporarily stored at the port of Bottrop and the Essen city port. The nearby Prosper colliery is one of the last still active mines in the Ruhr area. Every year a Christmas tree is installed on one of the Schüttberge and can be seen from the motorway.

km 31.1 - 13 cross eat-North
The four-lane, busy federal road 224 "Gladbecker Straße" leads south into the city eat and north about Gladbeck later then as A 52 at Gelsenkirchen and Marl over to the motorway junction Marl-Nord with the A 43. During rush hour there are regular traffic jams on the B 224, in the morning towards Essen, in the afternoon towards the north. The cross is shaped like a clover leaf and can be used to turn.
km 32.4 - 14 eat-Old food
This is where Heßlerstrasse is reached, which largely runs parallel to the autobahn and goes east to the next autobahn entrance. To the west it joins the L 448 "Altenessener Straße", the one to the north eat-Karnap and south to Altenessen.

km 33.5 - "World Heritage Site Zeche Zollverein"
The Zollverein colliery in eat has been a World Heritage Site since 2001. There are museums, a visitor center, restaurants and lots to see on the colliery and coking plant grounds. The distinctive double-headed headframe of shaft 12 is shown between the functional buildings. Die mit Kreisverkehren angebundene Straße Lehrhovebruch führt nördlich via der L 633 nach Gelsenkirchen und südlich nach eat-Katernberg.

Das ehemalige Bundesgartenschau-Gelände bietet so viele Möglichkeiten und interessante Landschaften, das eine Besichtigung leicht mehrere Stunden benötigt. Nahe dem Parkplatz, hinter der Kanalbrücke kommt aber schnell ein großer Kinderspielplatz mit Wasser- und Abenteuergelände, direkt dabei ein Cafe.

km 38,5 - "Weltkulturerbe Zeche Zollverein"
The Zeche Zollverein in Essen gehört seit 2001 zum Weltkulturerbe. Auf dem Zechen- und Kokereigelände gibt es Museen, Besucherzentrum, Gastronomie und jede Menge zu besichtigen. Der markante Doppelbock-Förderturm von Schacht 12 ist zwischen den funktionalen Gebäuden abgebildet. Der Schriftzug "Industriekultur" weist darauf hin, das das Museum ein Ankerpunkt the Route der Industriekultur ist. Anfahrt am besten über die Ausfahrt 15 "Heßler".
km 36,9 - 16 Gelsenkirchen-Zentrum
Markant ist der Werbeturm von TrinkGut nahe der Abfahrt, die vierspurige Grothusstraße (L 633) führt nordwestlich zum Nordsternpark (siehe Ausfahrt 15) und südöstlich ins Zentrum von Gelsenkirchen. In dieser Richtung gibt es Fastfood und Treibstoff! Wegen der gut ausgebauten Straße mit Mittelstreifen muss man allerdings bei den auf der linken Straßenseite liegenden Servicebetrieben erst bis zur nächsten Kreuzung fahren und wenden (Entfernungsangaben sind Luftlinien):

Auf dem Weg zur nächsten Abfahrt sieht man auf der südlichen Seite die 4 Glückauf-Kampfbahn liegen, das ehemalige Stadion des Gelsenkirchener Fußballvereins Schalke 04..
Anschließend kommt nochmal ein Werbeturm.
km 39,1 - 17 Gelsenkirchen-Schalke

Hier geht es auf die Alfred-Zingler-Straße, eine kleine Kreisstraße. In Richtung Norden kann man die Stadtteile Gelsenkirchen-Ost und -West erreichen, südlich geht es ins Zentrum von Gelsenkirchen.
Auf der nördlichen Seite liegt leicht erhöht ein Pendlerparkplatz, der zur "Parktankstelle" der Parkautobahn 42 ausgebaut wurde. Das darf man aber jetzt nicht als Benzin-Tankstelle missverstehen, es handelt sich vielmehr um eine Informationssäule bei den typischen roten Pfosten. Der Parkplatz selbst ist gut beleuchtet, sauber und sehr laut (auch wegen der nahen Eisenbahnstrecke).
In unmittelbarer Nähe der Abfahrt liegen keine Serviceeinrichtungen oder Pausenziele, die Abfahrt eignet sich aber um die Arena auf Schalke (heutiges Fußballstadion von Schalke 04, liegt 4,5km nördlich) oder die Zoom Erlebniswelt (Zoo, liegt 2,5km, nordöstlich) anzusteuern. Die Haltestelle "Gelsenkirchen-Zoo" der Emscherbahn (RB 43) liegt auch gut sichtbar nördlich der Autobahn.
km 41,4 - 18 Gelsenkirchen-Bismarck
Die Reckfeldstraße führt nördlich auf Parallelstraßen entlang des Kanals, direkt dabei liegt der Hafen Grimberg (Baustoff- und Recylinghändler). Südlich führt die Abfahrt auf Gelsenkirchener Gebiet.
Zwei Pausenmöglichkeiten:
- 4 Den Parkplatz hinterm Zoom ansteuern (1,1km ab Abfahrt, Grimbergstraße bis Beginn Kleingartenanlage) und das Auto nahe der Einfahrt abstellen. Gegenüber geht ein kleiner Fußweg auf die Rückseite des Zoos, nach 200m kommt von rechts der Radweg Erzbahntrasse hinzu. An ein paar Stellen ist der Zaun bzw. sind die Mauern zum Zoo mit Lücken/Fenstern versehen, sodass man hineinschauen kann. Die einfach Strecke bis zum Kanal mit der Grimberger Sichel beträgt 800m. Nicht wundern wenn es auf diesem Weg mal stinkt, gleich nebenan verläuft der Hüller Bach noch als Köttelbecke.
- 5 Den Parkplatz in der I. Querstraße am Kanal ansteuern (1,4km ab Abfahrt, via Alleestraße), das Auto abstellen und über die Fußgängerbrücke zur Künstlerzeche "Unser Fritz" laufen (liegt schon in Herne). Dort gibt es auch das Unser Fritz Outdoor (UFO Herne, Biergarten & Strandcafé), 44653 Herne, Alleestraße 50. Tel.: 49 (0)163 7739064 (nur zu den Öffnungszeiten). km 41,5 - Bachbrücke
Über den Hüller Bach, circa 50m.
Auf dem Weg zur nächsten Abfahrt befinden sich Bergehalden beidseitig der Autobahn, nördlich die von "Unser Fritz", südlich die von "Pluto-Wilhelm".
km 42,5 - "Zoom Erlebniswelt Gelsenkirchen"
Eisbär und Seelöwe werben auf der U-Tafel für den Zoo(m) in Gelsenkirchen. Erreichen kann man ihn über die Ausfahrten Gelsenkirchen-Bismarck und -Schalke.

km 43,1 - 19 Herne-Wanne
Die Ausfahrt führt auf die L 644, in Richtung Norden ist das die Recklinghäuser Straße (nach Herten and Recklinghausen), in Richtung Süden die Hammerschmidtstraße (nach Wanne-Eickel und weiter nach Bochum). Wenn in Crange Kirmes ist kann hier oft noch abgefahren werden.
Unmittelbar südlich der Abfahrt gibt es einen Edeka- und einen Lidl-Markt.
Nördlich gelangt man zum 21 Heimat- und Naturkundemuseum Wanne-Eickel, 44653 Herne, Unser-Fritz-Straße 108 (1km von der Abfahrt entfernt). Wer nicht ins Museum will kann im Wäldchen am Gebäude vorbeispazieren, die draußen platzierten Straßenbahnen bewundern und bis zum ehemaligen Wendebecken laufen, einfache Strecke 250m.Geöffnet: Mo geschl., Di-Fr 10:00-13:00 und 14:00-17:00 Uhr, Sa von 14:00-17:00 Uhr, So/Fe von 11:00-17:00 Uhr geöffnet.Preis: Erw. 1€, Kind 0,50€.
Vom ersten Freitag im August an fährt man für 10 Tage zwischen Wanne und Crange an der Cranger Kirmes entlang. Die Fahrgastgeschäfte sind von der Autobahn aus gut zu sehen, das Verkehrsaufkommen ist entsprechend. Die parallel verlaufende Bundesstraße 226 (Dorstener Straße) ist in Crange dann gesperrt.
km 44,4 - 20 Herne-Crange
Hier führen die Abfahrten im Bogen beide nach Süden auf die Dorstener Straße (B 226). Diese geht nach Westen nach Herne-Crange und weiter nach Gelsenkirchen-Erle. In der anderen Richtung biegt sie sich nach Süden und führt nach Herne-Holsterhausen und -Eickel und danach nach Bochum. Wie die Abfahrt 19 ist sie von der Cranger Kirmes beeinträchtigt, bei starkem Andrang wird sie ganz gesperrt und die Dorstener Straße ist ab der Abfahrt in Richtung Crange grundsätzlich zu. Aber die Kirmes dauert ja auch nur 10 Tage.
- Das Hallenbad "Wananas" vis a vis der Abfahrt ist 2011 leider ausgebrannt, es soll 2016[veraltet] wieder aufgebaut sein.
- Östlich liegt die beliebte 22 Karthalle Monza, die aber eher für eine längere Pause geeignet wäre.
- Fährt man an der Kreuzung Autobahnabfahrt/Dorstener Straße geradeaus kommt man zum 5 Sassenhof, 44653 Herne, Dorstener Straße 377a. Landmarken:
- Auf dem Weg zum Kreuz liegt links das Heizkraftwerk Herne-Baukau, ein Steinkohlekraftwerk der Steag. Der Schornstein ist 300m hoch, der Kühlturm 130m. Verbraucht werden jährlich 2 Mio Tonnen Kohle, produziert wird 950 Megawatt elektrische Leistung sowie Dampf für die Fernwärmeschiene Ruhr. Das Kraftwerk ist schon mehrere Abfahrten vorher sichtbar.
- Ebenso sind die Bögen des Horizontobservatoriums auf der Halde Hoheward von verschiedenen Punkten der Autobahn aus erkennbar. Die gut 150m hohe Halde liegt bei Herten and Recklinghausen und kann über die A 43 erreicht werden.
km 46,6 - 21 Kreuz Herne 
The A 43 geht südlich bis nach Wuppertal mit Anschluss an die A 1 und A 46. Nördlich führt sie nach Muenster. Das Kreuz ist kein Kleeblatt und deshalb nicht zum Wenden geeignet. Der Platz war beim Bau durch den Friedhof und die Eisenbahnstrecke eingeschränkt.
km 47,5 - 22 Herne-Baukau
Der hier angebundene Westring (L 551) ist kein wirklicher Ring sondern verläuft parallel zur A 43. Im Norden geht es nach Recklinghausen, im Süden durch Herne nach Bochum.
Nördlich liegt:

Jhr. inmitten eines gepflegten Parkes, Sitz des Emschertalmuseums. Das einzig problematische sind die Parkplätze, deshalb die Empfehlung verkehrt herum anzufahren: von der Abfahrt in Richtung Süden, dann links in die Bismarckstraße und wieder links in die Bahnhofsstraße, wieder links in den Karl-Brand-Weg mit Parkplatz auf der rechten Seite, insgesamt 1km Anfahrt. Die L 645, Hosthauser Straße, geht im Norden nach Recklinghausen und im Süden nach Herne, zum Ostfriedhof.
km 51,4 - 24 Herne-Börnig
Die Sodingerstraße, eine kleine Kreisstraße, führt nördlich nur bis zum Kanal und südlich nach Herne-Sodingen.

Das ist wieder ein Westring, allerdings diesmal eine Kreisstraße in Castrop-Rauxel.
- 7 Nördlich der Abfahrt liegt ein Pendlerparkplatz mit einem Fußweg in das kleine Naturschutzgebiet Schlaan.
- 10 750m südlich liegt ein Einkaufsgebiet "Am Landwehrbach" mit Aldi, einem Bäcker und einem Getränkemarkt sowie einem Gartencenter (Blumen für den Besuch vergessen?).
Eine weiter entfernte Pausenmöglichkeiten sind:
- 25 Schloss Bladenhorst, 44579 Castrop-Rauxel-Bladenhorst, Westring 346 (am Kanal im Norden, Anfahrt circa 2-3km). Typisch westfälisches Wasserschloss mit Torhaus, Wehrturm, Taubenhäuschen und Gräftenhaus, in Privatbesitz, kann umwandert werden.
- 26 Park Erin (ehem. Zechengelände), 44579 Castrop-Rauxel, Erinstraße (Richtung Süden, von der Ausfahrt 1,8km). Gewerbepark auf dem ehemaligen Zechengelände, ein Teil wurde aber auch in einen Landschaftspark verwandelt in dem man gut spazieren kann.
km 55,1 - 26 Castrop-Rauxel
Hier ist die vierspurig ausgebaut Bundesstraße 235 angebunden, nördlich geht es in den Stadtteil Habinghorst und dann nach Dates, südlich ins Zentrum von Castrop-Rauxel und dann weiter nach Dortmund-Lütgendortmund.
- 27 Grutholz&Nierholz (Wanderparkplatz), Castrop-Rauxel, Habinghorster Straße (1,1km von der Abfahrt in Richtung Norden). Waldgelände mit Wanderwegen.

The A 45 beginnt gerade erst ein kurzes Stück weiter nördlich an der A 2. Nach dem Kreuz Castrop-Rauxel führt sie weiter südlich an Dortmund vorbei, durch das Sauerland, weiter über Wetzlar and Hanau (Hesse) bis zum Seligenstädter Dreieck (Bayern).
Dortmund
km 58,3 - 27 Dortmund-Bodelschwingh
Die Autobahn endet kurz hinter dem Kreuz mit der Ausfahrt auf die Landesstraße 654 "Königshart". Diese führt nordöstlich über Dortmund-Mengede nach Luenen-Brambauer. Südwestlich geht es zum Castrop-Rauxeler Stadtteil Schwerin.
- 28 The Pendler-Parkplatz an der Straße Langenacker ist wieder als Infotankstelle ausgelegt. Da er etwas erhöht liegt hat man eine gute Übersicht über das Kreuz und die dort im Ohrenpark aufgestellten roten Stelzen.

Für Durchreisende ist die Zuflussregelung mit den Pförtnerampeln im Ruhrgebiet evtl. ungewohnt und kann zu Auffahrunfällen führen wenn der Vordermann beim Auffahren plötzlich bremst (um die Ampel zu beachten). Die Ampel ist bei dichtem Verkehr auf der Autobahn auf rot geschaltet und gibt in regelmäßigen Abständen immer nur einem einzigen Fahrzeug die Auffahrt frei. Bei (drohendem) Stau kann das nächste "grün" auch schon mal länger auf sich warten lassen.
In den letzten Jahren gab es mehrere Unfälle bei denen LKWs die Leitplanken durchbrochen und von der A42 gestürzt sind (dort wo diese auf Stelzen verläuft). Als Unfallschwerpunkt ist dies sonst nicht bekannt, die Strecke weist keine Besonderheiten auf und es waren auch keine Winterunfälle auf Glatteis.
