Dates is a city on the border of Ruhr area and Münsterland, she belongs to the circle Recklinghausen and is located at the largest canal junction in the world. The name "dates" does not come from the fruits but means: "Datha's homestead near the forest", where Datha is an old family name.

background

Datteln was a large parish in Vest Recklinghausen in the Middle Ages. Around the parish of St. Amandus there were numerous farms as ecclesiastical fiefdoms. From them later peasant communities and small villages developed, all very rural in character. Datteln has grown together through several community reforms from Pelkum, Meckinghoven, Hagem, Stutum, Wentrup, Hachhausen, Drybern and Klosters. Oer-Erkenschwick belonged to the Datteln office until 1965. Other districts are Beisenkamp, Hötting, Dümmer, Ahsen, Horneburg, Natrop, Emscher-Lippe and Schwackenburg.

At the end of the 19th / beginning of the 20th century, a lot changed in dates. On the one hand, the Dortmund-Ems Canal was ceremoniously opened by Kaiser Wilhelm II in 1899 after eight years of construction. In 1914 the Datteln-Hamm Canal and the connection to the Rhine-Herne Canal followed, and in 1930 the Wesel-Datteln Canal. Little by little, the largest canal junction in the world emerged. On the other hand, Datteln became a mining town with the Emscher-Lippe colliery in 1906, and the garden city of Beisenkamp was also created as a colliery settlement. Canal and mining resulted in a surge in the population.

Neighboring cities of Datteln are in the Münsterland: Olfen, Selm, Waltrop, and towards the Ruhr area: Castrop-Rauxel, Recklinghausen, Oer-Erkenschwick and Haltern am See.

Buildings

The Date sea is the junction of four channels:

  • The 2 Dortmund-Ems CanalDortmund-Ems Canal in the Wikipedia encyclopediaDortmund-Ems-Kanal in the media directory Wikimedia CommonsDortmund-Ems Canal (Q702695) in the Wikidata database comes from the south-east of Dortmund City harbor in the southern tip of Datteln (at Schleusenpark Waltrop). It continues north through the eastern part of Datteln past the Datteln power station, the Emscher-Lippe dump and the Datteln harbor Muenster until after Papenburg and via Ems to North Sea.
  • That comes from the south 3 Rhine-Herne CanalRhine-Herne Canal in the encyclopedia WikipediaRhine-Herne Canal in the media directory Wikimedia CommonsRhine-Herne Canal (Q481624) in the Wikidata database of the Dysentery or the Ruhr area in the Schleusenpark Waltrop and ends (as a name) here (the canal continues straight ahead, but it is now the DEK).
  • The river flows a little further north 4 Datteln-Hamm CanalDatteln-Hamm-Kanal in the encyclopedia WikipediaDatteln-Hamm-Kanal in the media directory Wikimedia CommonsDatteln-Hamm Canal (Q1172711) in the Wikidata database in the DEK. The DHK runs to the east south of the Lippe Luenen and Bergkamen over to after Hamm. There is a security gate shortly after the junction, two locks in Hamm and Werries, the canal ends at the Schmehausen harbor at the Westfalen power plant.
  • Farther north it flows on the other side of the 5 Wesel-Datteln CanalWesel-Datteln-Kanal in the encyclopedia WikipediaWesel-Datteln-Kanal in the media directory Wikimedia CommonsWesel-Datteln-Kanal (Q883467) in the Wikidata database in the DEK. He comes from Rhine in Wesel above Hünxe, Dorsten, Marl, Haltern am See and Ahsen (Total distance 60km, a total of 6 locks) and has the last lock immediately before its connection to the DEK.

The canals are 19km long in the Datteln area, which makes almost 40km of hiking and cycling trails on both sides.

There is actually a fifth canal in this canal landscape, the so-called 6 Old ride of the Dortmund-Ems Canal. It joins the confluence of the WDK with the DEK towards the north and ends in Olfen in a small port. However, this route is separated from the sewer network by earth walls and interrupted again and again along the way, it only consists of lined up water basins. Very nice for hiking because you get to the other side after a short distance and because no ship traffic disturbs nature.

In the south there is the 7 Waltrop lock parkWaltrop lock park in the encyclopedia WikipediaWaltrop lock park in the media directory Wikimedia CommonsWaltrop lock park (Q2239531) in the Wikidata database Two ship lifts and two locks as well as the Henrichenburg ship lift industrial museum.

The Lippe runs in an east-west direction as the city boundary between Datteln and Olfen. The river has to pass under the current DEK as well as under the old route or the canal has to go over it. That works with the help of the modern 8 Canal bridge and the 9 Old Ride Bridge , a historical gem.
