Wesel is a county seat on Lower Rhine in the northwest of the Ruhr area. She is a member of the modern Hanseatic League and the Euregio Rhine-Waal.
background
Wesel lies at the confluence of the Lippe and Wesel-Datteln-Kanal in the Rhine in the middle of the circle of the same name. The Issel flows through Wesel. The rivers determine the landscape over long stretches, not only through the course of the river itself, but also through oxbow lakes, peninsulas, bog areas and the like.
The mouth of the Lippe was also historically important, there were settlements and military bases early on. The first town charter was granted in 1241; The Netherlands and Westphalia were important trading partners. The upswing also brought a number of buildings that are still worth seeing today, including the late Gothic town hall and the Willibrordi cathedral. Occupations by Spaniards, Dutch and French followed, and fortifications and city walls were the result. Before the First and Second World Wars, Wesel was a garrison town. In February 1945 the city was almost completely destroyed by Allied bombing. In 1946 the reconstruction began according to the motto "Wesel helps itself". In the municipal reorganizations in 1969 and 1975, Wesel received a few smaller districts and became the district town of the new Wesel district.
Today the city consists of the following parts: Bergerfurth and Bislich, Büderich and Ginderich, Diersfordt and Flüren, Lackhausen and Obrighoven and in Wesel itself: Blumenkamp, Feldmark, Fusternberg, Schepersfeld and the city center.
The Wesel district consists of the cities and municipalities: Alps, Dinslaken, Hamminkeln, Hünxe, Kamp-Lintfort, Moers, Neukirchen-Vluyn, Rheinberg, Schermbeck, Sonsbeck, Voerde (Lower Rhine), Wesel and Xanten.
