background
The Issel flows through Hamminkeln, which was a natural border in Roman times. Later it separated the Franks in the west and the Saxons in the east or was the border of Christianization. In 946 the city was first mentioned as "Hamwinkile". In 1975, the current town was formed from several independent municipalities as part of the local reorganization, and in 1995 it received the title of city when it exceeded the 25,000 inhabitants. In addition to the former municipalities of Hamminkeln and Ringenberg, which today form the center, there are also the districts of Brünen (with Marienthal), Dingden, Loikum, Mehrhoog and Wertherbruch. Nevertheless, the city has a calm agricultural environment and has established important companies, especially in the textile and food industries.
