Castrop-Rauxel is a city in a circle Recklinghausen in the north of the Ruhr area.

At the time of the Romans there was already a military post here and subsequently a small settlement, as two streets crossed. The Villa Cartorpe (Cast = memory, Torp = village) was first mentioned in a document in 834. In 1484 there was a letter of freedom from John II of Cleve for the citizens of Castrop. In 1902 the city Castrop from the titular town and two rural parishes. In 1926, the Rauxel office was added, and Castrop-Rauxel was briefly part of the district Dortmund before it becomes circular in 1928. In 1962 the city received the title European city awarded. In 1975, in the course of the local reorganization, Henrichenburg is incorporated, and at the same time Castrop-Rauxel becomes part of the district Recklinghausen (The former license plate CAS is now back).

Castrop-Rauxels was a mining town for a long time, there were a total of four mines here: Erin colliery, Graf Schwerin colliery, Ickern colliery and Victor colliery. The last one was closed in 1983, when the city's advertising slogan "Industrial City in the Green" was renamed "European City in the Green".

The small Loemühle airfield in Marl (22km) is used by sport planes and business travelers.

Castrop-Rauxel main station

The 1 Castrop-Rauxel main train station is located in the district of Rauxel on the main route Dortmund-Duisburg. The RE3 (Rhein-Emscher-Express) runs every hour from Hamm, Kamen and Dortmund via Castrop-Rauxel to Wanne-Eickel, Gelsenkirchen, Oberhausen and Duisburg to Düsseldorf. The S2 runs from here to Dortmund and Herne (every 20 minutes). In Herne it goes on in longer cycles to Recklinghausen or Gelsenkirchen.

In Castrop is the 2 Castrop-Rauxel Süd stop, in Merklinde the Castrop-Rauxel-Merklinde station. Here she drives RB43 (Emschertalbahn) every hour on weekdays (every 2 hours on Sundays) from Dorsten via Feldhausen, Gladbeck, Gelsenkirchen, Wanne-Eickel, Herne via Castrop-Rauxel-Süd and -Merklinde to Dortmund. The route is from the NordWestBahn served.

Important: There is no junction where the trains meet. There are several kilometers between the main station and the stops!
