Marl is a city in a circle Recklinghausen in the north of the Ruhr area.

background

For a long time Marl was a small parish, the population only grew strongly with the establishment of the two mines "Brassert" (1905) and "Auguste Victoria" (1897). In 1926 the villages of Sinsen, Hüls, Lenkerbeck and Löntrop were incorporated. The establishment of the Chemical Works (1932), also jokingly called Gummizeche, gave a further boost. In 1936 Marl got city rights. During the Second World War, the industrial plants and marshalling yards were bombed, but the residential areas remained largely undamaged. In 1975 Hamm and Polsum came to the city. In the following decades, the city center planned on the Reisbrett was redesigned and expanded several times. It not only houses the town hall, large apartment blocks, parks, S-Bahn and bus stations, but also the "Marler Stern" shopping center with its air-cushioned roof.

Today, Marl consists of the center and the districts of Alt-Marl, Brassert, Drewer, Hamm, Hüls, Polsum and Sinsen. The districts have their own centers, each of which, with its shopping streets, district offices and churches, is the lively focal point of its residents.

Map of Marl
Traffic light handle for cyclists developed in Marl

There is a dense network of bus routes within Marl Vestic. They run every half hour, hourly or every two hours. The central meeting point is the bus station at the Marler Stern (right next to the Mitte S-Bahn station and the Marler Stern).

Marl was from 1993 to 2014 Bike friendly city. This is evident not only in the handles for cyclists at the traffic lights, but also in 140 km of cycle paths, numerous service facilities, cycle guards and one of their own Bike office. However, many roads are now in poor condition. At peak times (school closes, shift change in the chemical park and at the colliery) it can get crowded on the bike paths.

With the discontinuation of Karstadt, the shopping center had to struggle with vacancies, which are currently being offset somewhat by the move in by C&A. The star has several air cushions as the building roof and is therefore in the Guinness Book of Records.

In the Hüls district there is "Hülsstraße", a pedestrian zone with shops and a glass-roofed corridor.
