The town Wanne-Eickel is lying in Ruhr area and was independent until 1975. Since then, through a territorial reform, it has formed with the neighboring city Herne a common commune.

Districts

Until 1975 the city was divided into the following districts, the names of which are still mostly used by the local population:

  • Our Fritz / Crange
  • Tub north
  • Sharp angle ring
  • Röhlinghausen
  • Tub-south
  • Eickel

background

The historically more interesting part of the twin city was Eickel, which was already mentioned in the early Middle Ages. The district of Crange also has a long tradition, the horse market from which today's Cranger Kirmes developed, has existed since the 15th century. But Wanne and Eickel became more important - like other cities in the Ruhr area - during the industrialization of the 19th century. The main station was Wanne-Eickel, which developed into the most important marshalling yard in the central Ruhr area.

In 1926, Wanne, Eickel and Röhlinghausen were combined to form the independent city of Wanne-Eickel. The population peaked in the 1960s when it passed the 100,000 mark. As part of the major municipal reform in North Rhine-Westphalia, Wanne-Eickel merged with the neighboring town of Herne in 1975. Since then, Wanne and Eickel have been districts of the independent city of Herne. De facto But a very strong sense of independence was preserved. As a result of the decline of mining and heavy industry, many jobs were also lost in Wanne and Eickel, and the combined population of the two districts fell to around 70,000.

In the (West German) popular culture of the second half of the 20th century, Wanne-Eickel was regarded as the proverbial symbol of an average, provincial, somewhat boring city in the Ruhr area, which is somehow endearing for that very reason. The city was sung about in songs, mentioned in films, television programs and cabaret programs, often in a humorous and mocking contrast to more important metropolises or exotic locations.

Examples are the song Moon from Wanne-Eickel from 1962; the fictional character Adolf Tegtmeier the comedian Jürgen von Manger comes from Wanne-Eickel, as does Elke Heidenreich's character Else Stratmann; the Ruhrpott comedy Invitation to dance (1977) with Marius Müller-Westernhagen mainly plays here; in Frederik Vahle's nursery rhyme Anne coffee pot the main character ends up in Wanne-Eickel after visits to the Arctic, Africa and the Black Forest; in the eighties hit Surfing on the quarry pond (a cover version of Surfin ’U.S.A. the Beach Boys) the surfers don't come from California, but Wanne-Eickel; in the RTL comedy show Friday night news there were a number of skits under the title CSI: Wanne-Eickel as a parody of the American crime series CSI: Vegas.
