background

history

Herne as a village

Herne was a small village for a long time. It is first documented around 880 as haranni mentioned in documents of the monastery Werdens. Until the end of the 18th century, until the Strünkeder knights and barons began to stray out, Herne was under the land, court and ecclesiastical patronage of the Strünkeder knights and barons.

Rise to the big city from 1850

In 1847, with the opening of the Herne train station on the Cologne-Mindener Railway, Herne began to rise to become an important industrial city. A few years later, in 1856, the Shamrock colliery opened as the first colliery in Herne. Many other mines and heavy industry followed, which among other things led to a strong increase in population and ultimately led to the granting of city rights in 1897. Today, after Munich and Berlin, Herne has the highest population density of all cities in Germany. In 1906 Herne became an independent city, and in 1912 this rise was crowned with the inauguration of the Herne town hall.

golden post-war years

During the Second World War, Herne was largely spared from air raids as one of the few cities in the Ruhr area. According to legends, Herne was the residence of many foreign spies at the time and was therefore spared. The then still independent town of Wanne-Eickel, which has suffered greater damage, is hit harder. After the Second World War, Herne experienced a "golden decade": in largely preserved Herne, the entire Ruhr area met to enjoy life in the barely destroyed city in restaurants, department stores and cinemas, among other places. In 1975 the cities of Herne and Wanne-Eickel merged to form the "new city" of Herne.
