The Cologne / Bonn Airport Konrad Adenauer (also: Cologne Bonn Airport) is located on the southern outskirts of Cologne. It is located about 15 km from Cologne-Mitte and 16 km north of Bonn.
background
The airport was built in 1938 as a military airfield for the German Air Force. After the Second World War, the British Air Force took it over. In 1957 the military airfield was converted into a civil airport and expanded over the next few years for intercontinental flights. 1970 the then sensational new terminal building with direct motorway access was opened. Terminal 2 was added in 2000. In 2004 the airport was connected to the rail network, with the S-Bahn connection and the ICE route being opened at the same time.
Because of the proximity to the federal capital Bonn, the air force readiness for flight was stationed on part of the site. These are the planes that are used, among other things, to transport politicians on state visits. This stationing continued even after the government moved to Berlin. Since the airport is also a military airport, it is one of the very few German commercial airports without a night flight ban. That is why it is very popular with air freight companies, while passenger flights between midnight and 5 a.m. are very rare. The residents in the approach lanes have been calling for a ban on night flights for years.
