Hanover Airport - Flughafen Hannover

Hanover-Langenhagen Airport

The Hannover Airport is the international airport of Hanover and Lower Saxony. He is in Langenhagen, north of the capital of Lower Saxony. Hannover-Langenhagen is the ninth largest airport in Germany.

background

The airport was opened in 1952 on the site of a former military airfield north of Hanover. The current freight building was the terminal at that time. The first tower can still be seen on the freight building. At the beginning of the 1970s, work began on developing Hanover Airport into a commercial airport. A new tower was built, which today serves as advertising space, Terminals A and B with decentralized handling, i.e. H. a waiting room per gate and car parks 1 and 2. The airport opened in 1973. At that time it was the most modern airport in the world and still sets standards today (e.g. one baggage claim per gate!) Thanks to its short distances. Moscow's Sheremetjewo-2 Airport was built on the model of Hanover Airport for the 1980 Summer Olympics. Terminal A and B each have six gates. Terminal B has now been rebuilt and has two central control points, each with a waiting room with three gates.

The landmark of Hanover Airport, the old tower (from May 2009 it was gray and since April 2010 it has been in the colors of Germanwings)

With the increase in holiday travel and also to support the EXPO 2000 in Hanover, a third terminal was built, Terminal C. It has eight gates and a central processing facility. The waiting room can be divided into two parts as required (without passport control and with passport control). It also has four sectors with two gates each. In addition, a new tower was built outside the airport site.

Terminal D is closed to private air traffic today. It is used exclusively for military relocations and freight transport. Originally it was intended as a turnstile for Condor. For two years passengers from various cities in the Federal Republic of Germany were flown to Hanover here and then distributed to the holiday planes overseas. It was also discussed as a terminal for low-cost airlines. The passengers of the meanwhile in the TUIfly The lost Hapag Lloyd Express should walk from here to their plane. The cost of the conversion turned out to be too high.

Traffic at Hanover Airport

The airport has three runways. All are oriented in an east-west direction. The northern runway is 3800 meters long and 45 meters wide. It has a bad weather approval. The southern runway is 2,340 meters long and 45 meters wide. These two runways are intended and equipped for international aviation. The central runway is intended for small fliers. These are then processed via the General Aviation Terminals (GAT) I and II. The medium runway is only intended for visual flight.

A total of 47 aircraft can be handled at the same time at the airport, 20 of them directly via the passenger boarding bridges at Terminals A, B and C.

Air traffic to the countries of the former CIS is an important pillar of Hanover Airport. It is the second most important airport for these flights after Frankfurt (FRA). There are daily flights to Moscow, but many direct flights are on the schedule.

Air freight from Hanover is currently being expanded. There is a smaller FedEx machine to Paris. In 2014 TNT Airways also opened an air gateway in Hanover, with 2 planes a day to Liège, Billund and Oslo

A single journey costs € 2.70 and takes 37 minutes to Stöcken. The bus stop at the airport is located directly in front of Terminal C. There are taxi ranks in front of all three terminals, each on the arrivals level. The journey to the city center takes 20 minutes and costs around € 20.

automobile

The sign is already with a small parking lot far in front of the airport.

The airport is right on the motorway A352. Coming from the north, this branches off at the Hannover-Nord triangle A7 coming from the west at the Hannover-West triangle from the A2. The federal road branches off from the east 552 at the Langenhagen junction from the A2 and leads directly to the airport as an expressway.

The airport has a large number of parking spaces that are well signposted via a traffic management system. Car parks 1 and 2 are recommended for Terminals A and B, and multi-storey car parks 3 and East for Terminal C. During the holiday season, the north car park and parking lot 10 are also available. These are further away from the terminals, so free shuttles run to the terminals. For short-term parkers, parking spaces are available directly in front of the terminals.

Parking garages 1 and 2 are to be demolished in the near future and replaced by new, modern parking garages. The small gas station between car parks 1 and 2 also fell victim to this measure. For this purpose, a new, large, modern tank system has been built in the approach area, which not only looks after the airport, but also the passing traffic on the A352.

Airlines and Destinations

Round 40 airlines fly to around 70 destinations from Hanover. Scheduled traffic rules in Terminal A. Here is the seat of the Lufthansa and their partners. The Lufthansa and their partners in the Lufthansa Regional group fly from here many times a day Frankfurt (FRA) and Munich (MUC). Germanwings flies to, among other things, with its aircraft stationed in Hanover Rome, Vienna, London and Stuttgart. Also flies Brussels Airlines to Brussels, the Swiss Swiss flies to Zurichwho have favourited Scandinavian SAS to Copenhagen and the Portuguese TAP to Lisbon.

Handling of an MD 83 from Spanair

International air traffic takes place in Terminal B. This is where the flights to the east are handled. Several flights to the various Moscow airports take place daily. The Aeroflot comes daily, and the UT Air several times a week. In addition to the Moscow airports, the hub will also be Minsk of the Belavia served regularly. The Air Astana flies to regularly Kustanay.

The second travel destination is Turkey. Here tourists mingle with regular travelers. Most of the Turks who live in Germany now use the plane to get to their home country. To Istanbul you come with me every day Turkish Airlines, recently Star Alliance partner, so allied with Lufthansa. But also flies to it Sun Express to Istanbul, as well as to Izmir, Antalya and Bodrum. Air traffic to Turkey increases at night, as there is still no night flight ban in Hanover. Goals are Adana, Ankara, Izmir, Naturally Antalya, Gaziantep and a few more. Especially vacation flyers like Sun Express Germany, Pegasus Airlines and Freebird Airlines operate these routes, which is also in Terminal B British Airways (flies there three times a day London Heathrow) is at home.

Other destinations from Hanover include Bulgaria, Tunisia, Kosovo and Egypt and are served by airlines of the respective countries, among others Air Via, Bulgarian Air Charter, Nouvelair and Tunis Air.

In Terminal C, the classic German holiday and low-cost airlines have TUIfly and Condor their homeland. The goals of the companies are very broad. First of all, of course, locations in the Mediterranean area are offered, but in Terminal C everything has changed a little too. Not only holiday planes are handled here, but also scheduled planes. This is how the Spanish flies Vueling Airlines to Barcelona and also the Spanish one Iberia Express to Madrid. The join them KLM and the Air France with flights to Amsterdam Schiphol (AMS) and Paris-Charles de Gaulle. The Greek Aegean Airlines flies to Thessaloniki.

  • These fly to and from Hanover Airlines (Complete overview).

Terminals

Terminal B departure level

Hannover Airport has three terminals, all of which meet the standards of commercial airports. Terminal A only handles scheduled traffic. This is where Lufthansa and its partners are based.

Terminal B mainly handles scheduled flights to the east. Destinations in Turkey and in the hubs of the Russian Federation are served daily from here. There are also flights to holiday destinations in Turkey and Bulgaria.

Terminal C is the vacation terminal of Hanover Airport. Business starts here in the middle of the night and doesn't stop until late in the evening. TUIfly and Condor have their territory here. All flights of these companies are handled from this terminal. But be careful! The flights that depart in the morning to countries subject to border control are processed in Terminal C, but depart from Terminal B. The TUIfly flight to Monastir is checked in in Terminal C in the morning, but flies from Terminal B. KLM, Air France, Vueling and Iberia Express can also be found here.

Arrivals

Carrental at Hanover Airport between Terminal A and Terminal B.

The arrivals level is also below at Hanover Airport. There is a bar in Terminal A and Terminal C for waiting people to collect them, but they are only open when it is in operation. Otherwise there is an amusement arcade in Terminal C, where you can kill your waiting time. You can also get a coffee here. The car rental companies have their counters between Terminal A and B. All well-known landlords are represented here. This is also where the valet service is located, which can solve all minor parking-related problems. You can also get help here if the car does not want to start after a week of parking. Last but not least, the airport service is located in Terminal B. That's the girl for everything at the airport. If something is dirty, you want to know something, you want an exclamation point, you have lost or found something, all cases for the airport service.

departure

In addition to many restaurants and shops, there are of course also the airline ticket counters on the departure level of Hanover Airport. Terminal A is home to Lufthansa, Germanwings, Swiss, Brussels Airlines, TAP Portugal and SAS. In Terminal B you can find Turkish Airlines, Aeroflot, British Airways, Air Astana, UT Air, Belavia, Sun Express, Sun Express Germany and other airlines. TUIfly, Vueling Airlines, Iberia Express, KLM, Air France and Condor are based in Terminal C.

Airport Plaza Hannover Airport

The new shopping center has established itself between Terminal A and B. You can go shopping here seven days a week. A supermarket, a newsagent and a few more shops are always open when the airport is open.

In the corridor between Terminal B and C there is space for a number of travel agencies. You can book your trip here, especially on weekends. All known providers are represented. However, it is not possible to come with your suitcases packed and then fly.

The restaurants at Hanover Airport are firmly in the hands of Mövenpick and the brands that Mövenpick has under itself. In Terminal A there is the Mövenpick Cafe on the departures level and the Mövenpick Bar Meeting Point on the arrivals level. At both locations, guests are provided with coffee and bread rolls. The Marche Mövenpick Restaurant is located in the Airport Plaza (between Terminal A and B). In Terminal B, the Marché Bakery brand offers freshly baked rolls and bread as well as fish-squeezed orange juice and much more. In the waiting lounges of Terminals A and B there are also the Zigolini and Arabica bars. In the Visible in the travel market (between Terminal B and C) you can also take a look at the apron with the same offer. The computer freak gets his money's worth a few steps further. An internet café offers its services here. In Terminal C, Mövenpick will be in charge again. The sports bar is operated here on the departure level, while the Marche Bistro is in the waiting lounge of Terminal C. The Bistro Gate 66 on the viewing terrace is also part of Mövenpick. In the Airport Plaza, the McDonald's chain operates a fast food restaurant with an integrated McCafe.

Change

Hanover Airport does not have a transit area. So there is no way to look after passengers who fly from Novosibirsk via Hanover to Sal without a visa for the Schengen states. A transit visa must therefore be available.

Terminal B in the evening

As at all German airports, there is also a problem area in Hanover. If you come from a country that does not belong to the EU and have to move on to another place, you have to disembark, usually have to undergo border control, go through the air security check again and only then can you get back on board.

Liquids that are carried in hand luggage will be rejected, even if they have been bought in the airport security area. In German: You have booked the flight from Hurghada to Leipzig via Hanover. You buy a bottle of whiskey in the waiting room in Hurghada. If you fly to Hanover, you have to get off there, go through the border and customs control, have to go through the aviation security check again and the whiskey is rejected. Since you usually don't have anyone in Hanover to give the whiskey to, he's gone. The tip is: Except for direct flights, don't even buy.

security

The new tower at Hannover Airport

Hanover Airport has its own small police station. It is located on the arrivals level when walking from Terminal B towards Terminal C, in a small office. The area is almost always occupied. During the changeover times it happens that it is not occupied. You can either wait a bit or call the police.

The Federal Police is responsible for security at the airport. The federal police station is located on the departure level in Terminal B. When you enter the airport through the middle entrance, go through the door on the right, go up the stairs and ring the bell. All problems relating to crossing the border to another country are regulated here.

The crime at Hanover Airport is kept within narrow limits. Pickpocketing is largely unknown, including shoplifting. Nevertheless, one should take care of one's belongings, opportunity makes thieves. But you should refrain from leaving valuables in your car. Especially if they are in one of the parking garages. Navigation systems and radios are the target of Eastern European groups.

If you have lost something, you can contact the Airport Service Center. Items found are handed in here.

Parking / mobility

The airport provides a shuttle service from the more distant parking lots. Small buses can be used to get to the terminal from the parking lot free of charge. The buses leave from the north car park and from the large car park in the north of the route. The two parking spaces are partially closed in winter. Then there will be enough free spaces in multi-storey car park East and multi-storey car park 3 to park at the tourist tariff.

The parking spaces in front of the terminals and in multi-storey car parks 1, 2 and partly also in multi-storey car park 3 have the so-called "normal tariff". Parking here is quite expensive. You cannot park for less than 2 euros. The valet parking service has auxiliary police rights and, in addition to tickets, can also arrange for towing, which it also does. If you park here, you should also get a corresponding ticket. Car park 1 is currently being rebuilt (the old one has already been torn down). This is why parking spaces are very scarce, especially in front of Terminal B. On the arrival level, the car rental companies' return areas are currently located in the parking area in front of the terminal, so there are no parking spaces here and only a few parking spaces are available. Car park 1 is due to be completed this year, which will ease the situation.

All noteworthy providers of rental cars can be found in Hanover. The car rental area in the arrivals area between Terminal A and B is brand new. The car rental counters are located here. Here you will also find the valet service, which can provide information on all things parking. You can also fix minor breakdowns without having to call the ADAC.

activities

The viewing terrace

The waiting room in Terminal C

After the renovation, the viewing terrace is open again. The elevator is located between Terminal A and Terminal B, but can easily be overlooked. You have to be careful. From up here you have a good view of the apron. There is also a small aircraft museum around Karl Jahto, who is said to have flown a motorized airplane before the Wright brothers. However, this has not been proven.

guide

The airport offers guided tours. During such a tour you can find out about the customs of flying and you can take a look behind the scenes. The tour goes from arrival to check-in to the apron. Everything is described and explained in detail. Small children in particular enjoy the tours because you can see a real airplane up close. And who didn't even want to be a pilot?

Adventure exhibition

The adventure exhibition weltderluftfahrt.de (Tel. 0511-9771461) between Terminal A and B is a permanent exhibition on topics such as "The dream of flying", "The physics of flying" and the airport itself. A flight simulator, a school class campaign "The flying classroom" and the viewing terrace integrated into the exhibition complete the offer in addition to a cafeteria.

Lounges

There are two lounges at Hanover Airport. Lufthansa operates one. You can reach them in Terminal A through the air security check. You go left and then up the stairs. Entitled the whole Star Alliance can stop and be served here. Even if you want to go to Zurich or London and still have some time to spend in the lounge, you have to go to the security area. So you have to go through the aviation security check, even if you have to go to another gate afterwards, because, for example, the flight goes to London or Zurich and the flight is not processed at gates 4-6, because a border control is necessary.

Another lounge is the Club Lounge, which is operated by Air France and KLM in Terminal C. The airport itself still operates the Hanover Airport Lounge in Terminal A.

Planespotting

Hannover Airport seen from the apron

The airport has a viewing terrace that is open Mon - Fri from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m., Sat and Sun on public holidays from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. It is located between Terminals A and B and offers a good view of the apron and the southern runway. Entry costs € 2.50, for children € 1.50. There is also a small museum about Karl Jahto, about whom there is still some argument as to whether he flew in a powered airplane before the Wright brothers. From the viewing terrace you have a view of the entire apron and the southern runway. The view of the northern runway is somewhat restricted by the buildings in between.

There is a small café between Terminals B and C. Visible. From here you have a view of the apron in the area between Terminal B and C. You can see all the aircraft that are parked at Gates 10 to 16. There is also an observation station in the arrivals area. This is also located between Terminal B and C. There is a model of the airport here and you have a nice view of the apron.

If you walk from Terminal C in the direction of Parking Garage East on the departure level, you come to a bridge. From here you have a good view of Gates 17 to 20. But you can also photograph the military traffic of the British Army here.

The parking garage east is divided into two parts. In the middle there is a corridor that can be used to get to the fence. Here you can photograph aircraft taxiing towards the southern runway in an easterly wind.

Between Terminal B and Terminal C

To the west, in front of the southern runway, there is a small parking lot. If the wind comes from the west, the planes land from the east and you can take good photos of landing planes here. The planes that take off in an easterly wind are already too high to catch them.

Engelbostel is located in the south of the airport. It offers a nice parking lot for plane spotters. It's not that easy to find. Take the Engelbostel exit from the A 352 and head north. You come to Engelbostel. This is Hannoversche Strasse. You drive into Engelbostel and you will soon come to a crossroads. The main road turns left. Here you have to turn right before the right of way. You drive the street until it comes to an end and then you turn left.

Schulenburg Nord is the next point of the journey around Hanover Airport. The place is not easy to find. As with the last point, you come from the A 352 to Engelbostel. It is the same intersection where you have to turn, you do not go to the right, but straight on. You come to the road to Schulenburg Nord. There is a crossroads at the entrance to the village. If you drive to the right, you come to two nice points where you can take good photos of the extended apron of the airport. If you turn left you come to a large parking lot. Here you have a view of the northern runway. Here you can take good photos.

The next point is on the L 380 from Engelbostel to Resse. There is an asphalt path parallel to the main road directly at the landing area of the northern runway of the airport.

The next place for good photos is in the east of the airport. Here you can photograph planes landing when the wind comes from the east. Shortly before the start of the northern runway, you can take a path to the airport fence. From the Autobahn, take the Hanover Airport driveway, then you will see a traffic light with a petrol station on the left. Here you turn right. You come to a kinking right of way. A mirror is installed here because you cannot see the traffic from the right. Go straight on here and then the runway comes on the left. It's very nice at night. The illuminated runway with the aircraft landing. But be careful. No entry for vehicles of any kind. A traffic ticket threatens.

Before the right of way, turn left again. Here you come to a former Bundeswehr area. This is where the airport's administration buildings are today. Always straight ahead until it is no longer possible. There comes a parking lot. It's not far to the fence. The planes roll past here in the direction of the northern runway. It's not a hundred meters.

shop

Duty Free Shop at Hannover Airport

Hanover Airport recently opened the Airport Plaza. A number of shops have settled here. The Airport Plaza can be found in the corridor connecting Terminal A and Terminal B. There is a supermarket (EDEKA), a newsagents and a few other shops here. The shops are open every day of the week, but not around the clock. Business is open from 7:00 a.m. to 9:00 p.m., including Sundays.

There is also a supermarket in Terminal C, but it is tailored to the needs of travelers. It opens when operations in Terminal C begin and closes when it is finished. Here you can buy international press in particular. But the store also has newspapers from Germany ready for all needs.

There are a total of four Duty Free & Travel Value Shops in the waiting lounges.

kitchen

The catering at the airport is in the hands of Mövenpick with its subsidiary brand Marché. In Terminal A there is a large café on the departures level (above) and a small one on the arrivals level (below). They are open from five in the morning until eight in the evening. But that depends on the flight plan. If there are no flights, then the bars are also closed.

Marche Mövenpick operates a restaurant between Terminal A and B on the departure level. High quality cuisine is offered here, but it also has its price. The opening times also depend on the flight operations. Between 7 a.m. and 8 p.m. you will get something to eat here. In addition, special events take place here.

In Terminal B there is the large Marché bakery on the departure level. Here, too, the opening times are based on the flight schedule. You can't say the exact times. As a rule of thumb: if something is going on, then it's up. The bakery has the range of the Marché brand. There are rolls, bread, sandwiches, cakes, coffee and fruit juices. The prices are the same as those of the chain, there are no airport surcharges.

The Marche in Terminal C waiting room

If you go from Terminal B on the departure level in the direction of Terminal C, you will see the SichtBar on the right-hand side after many travel agencies. In the café bar you can have a coffee or a good glass of wine and enjoy the view of the airport apron in a cozy atmosphere at reasonable prices. The opening times are daily from 9:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m., including on weekends.

There is an internet café just behind the Visible. Here you can drink coffee and eat snacks while surfing the Internet. If you have brought your own laptop, you can do it via the WiFi hotspot without a terminal. The prices are quite hefty. It's just an airport.

Mövenpick operates a large bar in Terminal C on the departure level. This shop is also only open when something is going on. The shops do not know the exact opening times.

In the arrivals area there is the meeting point bar in Terminal A, which offers the same food and drinks as the Mövenpick bars on the departures level. It is open until all arrivals have taken place in Terminal A. If, for whatever reason, you have to spend the night at Hanover Airport, then this bar is sometimes the only way to have a little fun.

Mövenpick also operates bars in the waiting rooms in Terminal A, B and C. In Terminal A and B they are only quite small and you don't have a lot of choice, in Terminal C there is the slightly larger Marche Bistro. But there are different types of coffee and snacks everywhere. The fruit juice is recommended. Preferably the freshly squeezed orange juice, which is quite expensive at € 3.10.

Mövenpick still operates the Bistro Gate 66 on the viewing terrace.

If you want it inexpensive, there is also a small snack in the cargo area. However, it is not that easy to find. You drive to the right towards the arrival level. Shortly afterwards, where the road splits into departure and arrival levels, turn right to the cargo area. You drive around a parking lot and drive towards the main entrance to the airport. Before that there is a street to the right and then the Riedel butcher's car comes on the right. Here you can get cheap snacks, sandwiches for one euro in the morning and German cuisine for little money with new dishes every day. Then there is always schnitzel and sausages. The currywurst with french fries is what is called the Riedel Schniedel here at the airport. The schnitzels are weighed exactly to the gram, you pay for what you get. This is where the airport eats. And not just that. Do you have time, eat here! It doesn't get any cheaper.

A McDonald's has opened in the Airport Plaza between Terminal A and B. It is open 24 hours a day, 365 days a year. Certainly not for everyone, but you can always get something to eat and drink. And that at the usual conditions for the chain.

accommodation

The Maritim Hotel at Hannover Airport
  • 1  Maritim Airport Hotel Hannover, Flughafenstrasse 5, 30669 Hanover (across from Terminals B and C.). Tel.: 49 (0) 511 9737-0. The room prices usually start at € 128 per night, occasionally there are rooms from € 88. The Maritim is architecturally modeled on an airplane. The rooms are square - practical - good, nothing special, the ambience that the hotel offers is high class. The customer is king. In addition to a simple overnight stay, you can also book conference rooms and hold training courses here. Of course, you can also combine them. Crew-Mitglieder, die die Nacht in Hannover verbringen müssen, schlafen zumeist im Maritim. Das Essen ist im Maritim schon eine Stufe besser. Da werden unterschiedliche Dinge angeboten. In Buffetform. Das Ambiente ist etwas offen, aber nicht unangenehm.
  • 2  Leonardo Hotel Hannover Airport, Petzelstraße 60, 30669 Hannover (etwa 200 Meter vom Terminal C entfernt / vormals Holiday Inn). Tel.: 49(0)511 7707 0.
