background

Pied Piper legend

Hameln is the Pied Piper City - nothing has made the half-timbered town on the Weser so famous in the world as the legend of the Pied Piper, which is one of the most famous German legends and which has been translated into more than 30 languages. It was created by the Brothers Grimm in the German legends publishes and thus also justifies the affiliation of Hameln to German fairy tale route.

“In 1284 a strange man appeared in Hamelin. He wore a coat of multicolored, brightly colored cloth, which is why it is said to have been called Bundting, and pretended to be a pied piper by promising to rid the city of all mice and rats for a certain amount of money. The citizens came to an agreement with him and assured him a certain wage.

Pied Piper Extract on Lower Saxony Day

The pied piper then pulled out a pipe and whistled, and as soon as the rats and mice came crawling out of all the houses and gathered around him. When he thought there was no going back, he went out, and the whole crowd followed him, and so he led them to the Weser; there he put on his clothes and stepped into the water, whereupon all the animals followed him and drowned falling into it. But after the citizens had been freed from their plague, they regretted the promised reward, and they refused it to the man with all sorts of excuses, so that he went away angry and bitter.

On June 26th on St. John's and St. Paul's Day, seven o'clock in the morning, one after the other at noon, he reappeared, now in the form of a hunter, with a terrible face, with a strange red hat, and let his pipe be heard in the streets. This time it was not rats and mice that came running in large numbers, but children, boys and girls from the fourth year on, including the mayor's already grown daughter. The whole swarm followed him, and he led them out into a mountain, where he disappeared with them.

This was seen by a nanny, who followed from afar with a child in her arms, then turned back and brought the rumor into town. The parents ran in droves to all the gates and looked for their children with sad hearts; the mothers uttered a pitiful cry and weeping. From that moment on, messengers were sent around by sea and land to inquire whether the children or even some of them had been seen, but all in vain. A hundred and thirty in all were lost. As some say, two are said to have been late and came back, one of which was blind and the other mute, so that the blind could not show the place, but tell how they would have followed the minstrel; the mute but pointed the way, whether it belongs to nothing. A boy had run along in his shirt and turned back to fetch his coat, whereby it escaped the misfortune; for when it came back the others had already disappeared into the pit of a hill, which is still shown.

The Bungelosenstrasse

The street through which the children went out to the gate was still called in the middle of the 18th century. Century (probably still today) the bunge-lose (drum-less, toneless, silent), because no dance took place in it, nor strings were allowed to be stirred. Yes, when a bride was brought to church with music, the minstrels had to keep silent across the street. The mountain near Hameln, where the children disappeared, is called the Poppenberg (which was also called Koppenberg), where two stones in the shape of a cross have been erected on the left and right. Some say the children were led and into a cave Transylvania came out again. "

The legend after the Brothers Grimm - probably the world's most famous version, slightly modified from the original version: Brothers Grimm: Germans say; Vol.1. Berlin: Nicolai, 1816, Germans say, Pp. 330-332. No. 244: "The Children of Hameln"

In the Bungelosenstraße it is still a serious tradition to talk at an appropriate volume and to respect the music and dance ban - but there are no legal regulations.
