Paderborn is a must-see university town in North Rhine-Westphalia. Despite the destruction in World War II, the cathedral city still has many old buildings.

background

history

Paderborn is one of the oldest cities in Westphalia and was founded by Charlemagne in 777. The medieval Saxons originally lived in the area and were forcibly Christianized by the Franks. In the year 700, the then Pope fled from Rome to the Pader springs, which was to provide the basis for Charles' later coronation as emperor. On the occasion of a relic transfer of St. Liborius, the city closed in 836 Le Mans in France the oldest still existing town twinning in Europe. Later, the Ottonians used the Paderborn imperial palace as a place of court and assembly. The city, which is deeply rooted in Catholicism, had its greatest significance not only in the High Middle Ages, but later also in the early Baroque.

Until 1802/03 Paderborn was the capital of the Principality of Paderborn. Most of the historical buildings that are still significant today were built during this time, above all the Gothic cathedral and the town hall as well as the prince-bishop's residential palace in Neuhaus, both in the Weser Renaissance style. Paderborn also belonged to the Hanseatic League at this time. In the 17th century, the city was to change briefly to Protestantism until it was forced to Catholicism by the prince-bishop through violence and educational reforms. In 1614 a university was founded in Paderborn for the first time, which continues today in the Paderborn Theological Faculty. The function of the capital city made Paderborn an administrative and educational location at an early stage, always rooted in an agricultural environment. The Thirty Years 'War and the Seven Years' War in particular devastated the city and region.

In 1802/03 the city was occupied by Prussia. After a brief interlude in the French-dominated Kingdom of Westphalia, the principality became Prussian again. In the 19th century the city of Berlin was only treated as a provincial town. The industrial revolution did not take place in Paderborn, which was neglected by Prussia. The city also led a shadowy existence during the Weimar Republic. Although National Socialism could never achieve an absolute majority due to the dominance of the Catholic center, the residents of the Jewish faith were deported and murdered.

Townships

During the Second World War (1945), the city, which was built mainly from half-timbered houses, was 80% destroyed, although it had no strategic importance. The reconstruction was "car-friendly". Streets were widened, the once picturesque half-timbered town got unadorned stone buildings. However, some of the important churches and sacred buildings have been preserved. The overall character of the city from the Middle Ages and early modern times can be guessed well. The city has experienced a remarkable boom since the 1970s. In 1972 the University of Paderborn was re-established as a comprehensive university. A comprehensive regional reform, which should upgrade the city to the regional center, the development of an important computer industry (Nixdorf) and the establishment of a regional airport were only a few cornerstones that led to a large population growth.

The last British troops are due to leave Germany in 2015, which is why the city is now facing another restructuring. With the land used by the military becoming free, the city and the surrounding area are opening up new opportunities. However, this also breaks away a piece of Paderborn culture.

importance

The city is an upper center, between Wins, Dortmund, Bielefeld, Goettingen and kassel. In the post-war period, the city grew disproportionately through regional reform, influx and birth surpluses: over 100% since 1950.

It feels like there is more in Paderborn Steakhouses than in other cities, especially more (very) good ones: that La Pampa in Hathumarstraße (not to be confused with the "Las Pampas" in Koenigstraße, which offers medium quality) and that Gaucho (Mühlenstraße, absolute number 1 in Paderborn) in the city center, as well as that Argentina at the Bürgerpark (Borchener Straße).

This is an insider tip for coffee and home-baked / hearty cakes as well as breakfast in a nice atmosphere Tea room in the gallery hotel (Pader headwaters). In-house restaurant is good too.

Inexpensive but tasty, there is Italian food at Pane e Vino in Mühlenstraße, for example gnocchi in sage butter with Parma ham strips for about 9 € or chicken breast in Gorgonzola sauce with rosemary potatoes for about 12 €. Typical little Italian who pampers his guests well. Changing lunch menu, better to reserve in the evening.

Westphalian cuisine is available in the Restaurant Kaiserpfalz in Elsen, Von-Ketteler-Strasse. High standards and price, brewery cellar with a good selection of wines.
