From the city's history
Bad Karlshafen was named Sieburg (Syburg) in 1699 by Landgrave Karl as an exile town for religious refugees France founded and received town charter in 1710. In 1715 the city of Sieburg was renamed Karlshafen in honor of the founder (at that time Carlshaven written); Coat of arms and inscriptions such as "CLZH" = Carl Landgrave of Hesse from the early days can be found on many houses.
Initially, the city did not develop as quickly as expected due to a lack of agricultural land. It was only through the construction of the Landgraf-Carl-Kanales, which the city's stacking right Münden should handle, there was an economic upswing in Karlshafen. Remnants such as the harbor basin bear witness to the ambitious project that was supposed to connect the Diemel with the Rhine, but which was discontinued after the death of Landgrave Karl in 1730.
In 1730 the Huguenot pharmacist Jacques Galland discovered the first brine springs. In 1763 three graduation towers and a pumping station for salt production went into operation. The trade in salt began and a health resort was established. The annual production was around 500 t before the salt production had to be stopped in 1853 after the establishment of the Prussian-Hessian Customs Association to protect the North German brine deposits.
Carlshafen belonged to the Hofgeismar district formed in 1821. After the annexation of Kurhessen by Prussia in 1866, it came to the Prussian province of Hesse-Nassau.
On March 30, 1848, the Carlsbahn became the oldest railway line Hessen opened, which from Bad Karlshafen to Hofgeismar-Hümme led. The Carlsbahn was also affected by the numerous closures of branch lines in the 1960s and was closed on September 27, 1986 due to the desolate condition and safety-related deficiencies in the railway infrastructure.
Since 1934/35, Karlshafen has been officially written with a 'K'. The city of Helmarshausen, historically much older than the actual Karlshafen, was incorporated in 1972. On May 27, 1977, the city of Karlshafen was awarded the title Bad. Today it has a modern spa center, a graduation tower built in 1986 and the Weserberglandtherme that opened in 2004.

After Paderborn renounced the village in the 15th century, it was fully established Hesse. Sacred buildings
The 1 Stephanuskirche (Protestant) was built from 1960 to 1962 in contemporary style and is the first purely Protestant church in Bad Karlshafen; Before that, Bad Karlshafen was the only Protestant town in Germany without its own church. The altar, pulpit and baptismal font, which were made from local Weser sandstone, are just as simple as the church building. The baptismal window and the Last Supper window are made by the artist Prof. Dr. Hans-Gottfried von Stockhausen, the organ with original pipes from the Invalidenhaus by organ builder Werner Bosch. The Stephanuskirche is open daily from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. Harbor square / comprehensive school (Lines 180, 193, R22 and Bison line)
The 2 St. Michael Church (Catholic) was built from 1955 to 1956 after a pastoral care office was set up in Bad Karlshafen as early as 1891 and a chapel was available from 1935. On August 26, 1956, the church was consecrated in honor of St. Michael. While the altar was set in the floor in the middle of the choir room, the cross with its quiet charisma is an essential part of the choir room. A wooden sculpture of Mary with the baby Jesus, which is of unknown age, is also considered a special piece of jewelery. Spa center / Brueckenstrasse (Lines 180, 193 and R22)
The 3 Stadtkirche Helmarshausen (Protestant) is located in the immediate vicinity of the former monastery church and was probably built in the 10th century in the Romanesque architectural style. Over the centuries, the simple hall church nave has been renewed again and again, for example as a result of a city fire in 1464 or 1799 due to dilapidation. The organ from 1732, which was renovated in 2001 and comprises 18 registers with around 1,100 pipes, is a special gem. Also worth seeing are the year-round exhibits from the Gospel Book of Henry the Lion in a glass showcase in the front part of the nave. The city church Helmarshausen is open during the day. parking spot / hospital (Lines 180 and 523)
The 4 Church of St. Peter and Paul (catholic) in Helmarshausen was built from 1970 to 1971 as the successor to a Catholic chapel from 1957. On November 14, 1971, the church was consecrated in honor of the Holy Apostles Peter and Paul and is now only available after consultation with the parish office. The background is the restructuring carried out in recent years and a lack of priests in the Catholic Pastoral Association, so that the Church of St. Peter and Paul today functions as a subsidiary church of the Church of St. Michael Bad Karlshafen. - 5 Baroque city layout. is one of the main attractions of Bad Karlshafen. The spa town was built as a portal town in the simple bourgeois baroque. From the original construction plan, the port with canal, the handicapped house, the two middle carts and the two half carts were completed. These are still largely preserved in their original state, and care is taken not to destroy them with neon advertising, for example. The offers an interesting tour through the old town Museum path of the Huguenot Museum. The

- 6 Historic port. originated at the beginning of the 18th century as part of the Landgraf-Carl-Kanales and should Bad Karlshafen's gate to North Sea become. However, the port was never properly used and after the death of Landgrave Karl in 1730, further expansion of the canal was given up. Two centuries later, the connection between the port and the Weser was closed by a permanent bridge. Recently, plans were made public to open the harbor basin, and a Weser lath ship was also placed in the harbor basin. At the moment, however, the harbor is "greened" as the water was drained for extensive restorations. There are several park benches around the harbor basin. The

- 6 town hall. was built from 1715 to 1718 and originally served as a packing and warehouse, and later as a district court. The building, which was designed by Friedrich Conradi and occasionally also served as the residence of the sovereign, has a striking arcade and on the first floor a mirrored stucco ceiling based on designs by the Italian Andrea Gallasini. The rose garden, which was newly laid out in 2009, is located in the inner courtyard of the town hall. The carillon in the tower not only announces the time, but also plays different melodies four times a day. The outer facade of the town hall with the harbor in front is a typical photo motif in Bad Karlshafen. The

- 7 Invalid House. is the first public building in Bad Karlshafen and was built from 1704 to 1710 according to the plans of Friedrich Conradis as a retirement home for former officers and soldiers of the Hessian army. As a model for the first functional building for soldiers who served in Germany was used by the "Hotel des Invalides" built in Paris under Louis XIV. The chapel, completed in 1708, served the three Reformed parishes of the city as a place of worship for a long time and since 1963 as the place of worship of the New Apostolic Church, as well as the architect's final resting place. - 8 Former Benedictine abbey. The former Benedictine abbey in Helmarshausen was founded as a monastery in 997 by Count Eckerhard von Reinhausen. During the artistic and economic heyday of the 11th and 12th centuries, the Helmarshausen monastery produced important illuminating products such as the Gospel Book of Henry the Lion and valuable goldsmith work by the monk Rogerus. In 1538 the monastery was dissolved with the beginning of the Reformation and two years later it was taken over by the Hessian Landgrave Philipp. From 1965, the Protestant parish converted the site into a youth center with a kindergarten. The floor plan of the monastery church was made visible again a few years ago through sandstone slabs. The monastery complex is freely accessible.

The Krukenburg is considered an unusual fortified church, as it housed both secular and spiritual power, which were at times hostile to one another. Today you can visit the remains of the walls of the abbot's house and the Paderborn house on the Krukenberg. In the nearby Café zur Krukenburg there is the possibility to get detailed information about the medieval history of the place, about the castle and the monastery Helmarshausen (Weser gallery / museum).Open: 01.04.-31.10 .: daily 10: 00-18: 00.Price: adults € 2 / person, children (5-15 years) € 1, groups (from 12 people) € 1 / person.
