Hann. Münden, also called Münden by the locals, has its name affixed to Hann. from the Kingdom of Hanover, whose name is used to distinguish the city of Münden from sounding very similar Minden added, but due to the length then back to Hann. abbreviated. Today the name is Hann. Münden is the official name of the city. Half-timbered town, city of three rivers - the names for Hann. Münden is also diverse and has special features: over 700 half-timbered buildings, some of them very well preserved, narrow streets, the Welfenschloss and the location at the confluence of the Werra and Fulda and the Weser make the city attractive for tourists and day-trippers.

Already in 1183 in documents from Hann. Münden is spoken of as a city, but nothing is known about the exact origins of the place. The Hessian city, which was later owned by the House of Calenberg-Göttingen, a branch of the Guelphs but in a border location, has been located on the border since ancient times Hesse. Early in 1247, the city received stacking rights, i.e. the right to demand from passing merchants that they offer their goods for sale in the city, which together with the construction of a stone bridge over the Werra (before 1329) and thus control of the Fords and trade routes led to the wealth of the place. The numerous turmoil of war in the following centuries did not leave the town, which had become a Protestant around 1540, without a trace: In the Thirty Years' War, Münden was captured by the troops of General Tilly at the beginning of June 1626 and a large part of the population was killed - this darkest day in town history is also known Blood pentecost handed down. During the Seven Years' War the city was occupied by French troops. During the wars of the last century, Hann. Münden largely preserved from destruction, but the time of National Socialism can also be recorded as an inglorious chapter in this city. After World War II, Hann. Münden part of the British zone of occupation.

Economically, Hann. Münden is always up-to-date, some important commercial enterprises have been founded over the centuries. The connection to the railway network in 1856, the establishment of the Forest Academy in 1886, basalt mining in the Kaufunger Forest and the long history as a garrison town all had beneficial effects on the town's economic situation.

In the course of the territorial reform in 1973, the former district town became part of the Göttingen district. The places Hedemünden (on the Werra), Bonafort (on the Fulda), Gimte, Volkmarshausen, Hemeln (on the Weser), Mielenhausen, Wiershausen, Lippoldshausen (in the Weser Uplands, north of the Werra and east of the Weser) became Hann. Münden incorporated. Since 2012, however, after a change in the registration regulations, many vehicles with the traditional license plate have been seen again HMÜ in the region - an expression of the regional solidarity with this southernmost tip of Lower Saxony, wherever Mündener and no Göttinger dwell.

City structure

Since the municipal regional reform in 1973, the city of Hann. Münden from the core city with Altmünden, Hermannshagen, city center, Neumünden, Kattenbühl and Blume and a total of ten districts together.
