The German half-timbered street runs over a distance of over 2,800 km in seven stages through currently almost 100 cities from north to south Germany.
background
The goal of the ARGE historical half-timbered towns based in Fulda has been the preservation of the numerous styles of half-timbering in Germany since its foundation in 1975. In addition to the building law and construction technology divisions, a working group was set up to pursue tourist goals. She has had the name since 1996 German half-timbered street, in which, however, not all members of this consortium are represented.
Truss
The half-timbered construction is a type of construction that has been developed over a long period of time; the forerunners of the half-timbered houses were simple huts and post structures.
The construction elements of a historical framework are the vertical posts, inclined struts, horizontal bars and the filling of the framework.
Modern science distinguishes three types of half-timbering according to their regional distribution, but they have often mixed up over time:
Saxon half-timbering (Low German half-timbering): The distribution extends from the German coasts to around the northern edge of the Harz and from the Netherlands to Brandenburg. The hallmarks of the construction are the orderly and even spacing of the framework, which makes it appear straightforward and sometimes even almost strict.
Alemannic half-timbering (also Upper German half-timbering), with large distance between posts and external leaf connections of the wooden beams. Because of these unstable connections, especially in the event of a fire, this framework was even banned from time to time, and from the 15th century onwards it is part of the Franconian framework. It was spread in the regions of the Neckar and Lake Constance, the Black Forest and the Bohemian Forest.
The Franconian half-timbering (also Central German half-timbering) differs from the Saxon style in that the wooden beams are unevenly spaced with numerous decorative shapes, making it look much livelier. Another characteristic is the rising gable, the building is oriented upwards. Most of the connections are mortised. The distribution extends from the low mountain ranges south to the Neckar, and from Poland in the east to Alsace in the west. The decisive economic advantage of the construction method is that for wood (oak and spruce) and filling (clay wickerwork, brick or quarry stone) readily available materials can be combined as required on site. Added to this is the better thermal insulation of the half-timbered walls compared to stone construction. The progress in the development of carpentry-like connection of wooden beams enables increasingly complex constructions.
It was not until the 15th century that it became common practice to place the wooden posts on continuous thresholds above the foundations, so that they are protected against moisture from the ground and also have a much higher load-bearing capacity than posts anchored directly in the ground. With this construction method, multi-storey half-timbered buildings with wooden beam ceilings are possible.
In the 18th century, the half-timbered frame went out of fashion, it was considered "rural", the stone town house was modern. The exposed half-timbering is also considered to be at risk of fire, the existing buildings are being plastered. With the romantic trends at the end of the 19th century, however, the aesthetic charm of the half-timbering was rediscovered and the half-timbered facades were exposed.
In contrast to the stereotypical and uniform facades of modern architecture, the individual half-timbered house with its original ornamentation appears, no half-timbered house is like the other, today perceived as particularly picturesque, varied and attractive.
To get the title as "As the oldest half-timbered house in Germany" Several objects are arguing, the age of the building is determined with the dendrochronology (thickness of the wooden rings):
On the one hand, the "Abteihof St. Marien" in Kobern-Gondorf on the Moselle as the oldest half-timbered house in Germany, it was built in the years 1320/1321.
After discoveries in 2003, in Quedlinburg the house in "Hell 11" as another candidate for the title: According to the results of the examination of the cores from the wooden beams, the oak and the spruce date from the period from 1215 to 1230. There is also a first documentary mention of the building by an abbess Sophia from 1233.
preparation
The German half-timbered road is usually driven through by car or motorcycle, whereby individual sections should be put together according to personal taste. The cities along the route also support this with special tourist offers, e.g. through motorhome parking spaces or through vintage car rallies or city tours.
To the article format:Official members of the study group have their own "paragraph" with a point and become highlighted in bold. But it is often just as worthwhile to visit other (half-timbered) cities along the route that do not belong to the German half-timbered street. These cities are briefly mentioned in the route notes (but without Highlighting of the city name).
