Ludwigsburg is a district town in Baden-Württemberg with approx. 85,500 inhabitants and is located north of Stuttgart. The city consists of the districts Mitte, West, Ost, Nord and Süd as well as Pflugfelden, Eglosheim, Hoheneck, Oßweil, Grünbühl, Neckarweihingen and Poppenweiler and some residential areas.
Ludwigsburg was founded in the Baroque era. Around 1704, the Duke of Württemberg Eberhard Ludwig build a small castle on the site of a burned down courtyard. A year later this castle was named Ludwigsburg. In 1709 the first residential buildings were built around the castle. A year later, the construction of a garden began, the castle was expanded and supplemented. From 1718 the new Ludwigsburg settlement was given city rights, became a ducal residence instead of Stuttgart and thus the capital of Württemberg, but lost this property again after several changes. The baroque buildings from the time the city was founded have remained, and they have largely been preserved intact.

The youth hostel is quietly located up on the mountain, just above the Neckar. Cyclists should consider the really steep ascent, it may be more sensible to switch to the (heavily trafficked) road than to take the steep, in poor condition bike path through the forest. The ascent there is probably only manageable by pushing for the vast majority of cyclists with luggage, and even that can be exhausting. The rooms of the youth hostel are newly furnished, the sanitary facilities are new, clean and very well maintained. Breakfast is normal youth hostel standard, you shouldn't expect anything fancy.Check-in: 4.30pm-9pm.
