According to legend, at the beginning of the 18th century, Margrave Karl Wilhelm von Baden had a dream of a fan-shaped city. So in 1715 the foundation stone was laid for a princely residence, from which the streets lead away in a fan shape.

By plane
The nearest airport is about 30 km south near by Baden-Baden. To the Karlsruhe / Baden-Baden airport
(IATA: FKB) To be reached by public transport, you first take the S-Bahn Rastatt or Baden-Baden, from there there are bus connections directly to the terminal. Depending on the time of day, the journey from the main train station takes between 40 and 70 minutes. There is also a bus connection with line 140, which runs from the train station in Heidelberg via Karlsruhe Hbf to Karlsruhe / Baden-Baden Airport.
The nearest major airports are the airport Frankfurt(IATA: FRA), the Stuttgart Airport(IATA: STR) and the Strasbourg airport(IATA: SXB). The former can be reached with the ICE from Karlsruhe every hour with a journey time of over an hour.

To Stuttgart, Constancy, Mainz and Neustadt an der Weinstrasse operate regional express lines. Other routes are connected with regional trains, the RheinNeckar S-Bahn or a dense urban railway network. With these railways, among other things, tourist destinations in the Black Forest (Alb valley, Murgtal, Enztal, Black Forest Railway) and im Kraichgau Accessible without changing trains, partly with network tariffs, as well as cities such as Heidelberg. The A5 federal highways meet in Karlsruhe (Basel-Frankfurt) and the A8 (Karlsruhe-Munich). One drives to the city center via one of the exits Karlsruhe-Mitte, -Süd or -Durlach. The A65 from the direction of Rhineland-Palatinate turns into a dual carriageway (Südtangente) shortly before Karlsruhe am Rhein, which leads to the A5.

Public transport
The public transport system in Karlsruhe is very well developed. Karlsruhe is known for the Karlsruhe model, which means that some light rail lines also use the railroad tracks. This means that there are no transfers from the surrounding area to the city center. The trams have right of way at most intersections. All public transport is part of the Karlsruhe Transport Association (KVV) and can be used with a single ticket (with the exception of the Turmbergbahn and Schlossgartenbahn).
Proof of the success of the Karlsruhe model is the drastically increasing number of users with 170 million passengers per year (2008). For this reason, too, the so-called combination solution [[w: combination solution_ (Karlsruhe)] [1] planned, which includes the construction of a tram tunnel under Kaiserstraße, Karlsruhe's main shopping street and pedestrian zone, and the construction of a second railway line in Kriegsstraße. Construction began in 2010 and completion is planned for 2019.
Most tram lines run every 10 minutes during the day, after 8:00 p.m. and on Sundays until around 1:00 a.m. every 20 minutes. There is a night line network over which most destinations can be reached at least every hour throughout the night.
One differentiates in Karlsruhe

Tickets
A single trip for the Karlsruhe city area costs € 2.50. The day pass is recommended. They are available in the City / 3 honeycomb version (e.g. City of Karlsruhe plus a neighboring honeycomb) for individual travelers or for a maximum of five people, as well as Regio (area of the KVV) and RegioX (KVV plus some other routes). They are also available from the bus drivers of the city buses, from the ticket machines at the stops and from the ticket machines in the trams. Tickets are no longer available from tram and tram drivers.
Bahncard holders can buy a BahnCard ticket for single journeys. This costs about 25% less than the normal price. These tickets are available from machines, but not from the driver.
Attention: At normal KVV machines you get non-validated tickets that have to be validated on the train or on DB trains on the platform, while you get already validated tickets at DB machines and KVV machines on DB premises. If you want to buy tickets in advance, you should pay attention to the information on the validation at the machine.
Accessibility
The barrier-free expansion of the stops and the use of suitable railways varies greatly. Newer route branches and the first converted stops in the city center currently only form a rudimentary network suitable for wheelchairs. There are also different vehicle heights: low-floor trams suitable for 34 cm high platforms, medium-floor trams suitable for 55 cm high platforms and the RheinNeckar S-Bahn suitable for 76 cm high platforms. There are currently some options to change between these at Durlach train station, at the Gottesauer Platz stop and, from spring 2013, at the Mühlburger Tor. All platforms at Karlsruhe Central Station are now accessible by elevator. The tram stop on the station forecourt is not wheelchair accessible, however, Niederflurbahnen can be reached at the nearby Poststraße stop.

construction sites
The combined solution is the largest transport project in downtown Karlsruhe. From 2021 a tram tunnel will run under Kaiserstraße and southwards from Marktplatz to Augartenstraße. From 2021, there will be a tram route between tree-lined avenues on Kriegsstraße, including a continuous car tunnel from Karlstor to Mendelssohnplatz. Due to the large number of construction sites, traffic obstructions or restrictions should be expected.

Churches
- 1 St. Stephan.
(Catholic): The classicist rotunda built by Friedrich Weinbrenner is part of the Pantheon Rome modeled after and is the largest Catholic church in the city. After being destroyed in the war, it was rebuilt in the 1950s with a simplified spire and a redesigned interior. It is the center of the Dean's Office "Karlsruhe".
- 2 City Church. (ev.): The Protestant town church on the market square was built from 1807 to 1816 according to the plans of Friedrich Weinbrenner in the classicism style. After severe destruction in World War II, the church was rebuilt in the 1950s with a newly designed interior.
- 3 Little church. (possibly). Built from 1719 to 1721 in the Louis Seize style, it blocks the course of Kreuzstrasse. After being destroyed in the war, it was rebuilt largely true to the original in 1946-49.
- 4 Luther Church. (ev.): Art Nouveau church with subordinate neo-Romanesque elements on Gottesauer Platz.
- 5 St. Bernhard. (Catholic): Neo-Gothic church at Durlacher Tor.
- 6 Christ Church. (ev.): Neo-Gothic church at the Mühlburger Tor.

- 7 Karlsruhe Palace. Forms the center of the city. The streets of the city center extend in a fan shape from the tower of the baroque building, which was built in 1715. The castle houses the Badisches Landesmuseum with a collection from the Stone Age to the 19th century. Worth mentioning is the so-called "Turkish booty" of Margrave Ludwig. The castle tower is accessible and offers a beautiful view over the city.

- 10 Karlsruhe City Hall. It was built from 1821 to 1825 by Friedrich Weinbrenner in a classical style. The building was built between 1881 and 1884 according to plans by the architect Josef Durm. The banker August Schmieder, who bought his fortune in Breslau, had the villa built as a retirement home. Prince Max von Baden acquired it in 1894. The building was badly damaged in the air raids in World War II. After its reconstruction, it housed the Federal Constitutional Court and the University of Education for some time. The town's cultural center with the Museum for Literature on the Upper Rhine, the town history museum and the youth library have been housed in the Prinz-Max-Palais since 1981.
- The 13 Hereditary ducal palace. on Kriegstrasse has been the seat of the Federal Court of Justice. The neo-baroque style building with an imperial dome was built from 1891 to 1897 Josef Durm built.

Streets and squares

- The Ludwigsplatz is one of the most popular places in the western inner city. Numerous restaurants, bars and cafes invite you to linger and have an after-work cocktail. Turmbergbahn
The Turmbergbahn zum Turmberg in the Durlach district is the oldest funicular in Germany (built in 1888). In good weather you have one View of the whole city and up to the Palatinate and the Alsace. There are several hiking trails there. Travel times from April to November 1, daily from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m., in the other months, on weekends and public holidays from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m., every 15 minutes or as required. The train is still manned by a conductor who operates the train and sells tickets. The Turmbergbahn is not integrated into the Karlsruhe Transport Association. Celebrations and festivals
- African Summer Festival. African culture festival held annually in July. A high cultural level is always guaranteed through the participation of representative music and dance groups from various African countries. - At the Gottesauer Schloss there is one for several weeks every summer Open-air cinema.

Most of the department stores and retail stores are on Kaiserstraße. There is a somewhat upscale selection of shopping opportunities in the Postgalerie and in the Waldstrasse behind it. The 2 Post gallery in the former main post office of Karlsruhe is one of the most beautiful shopping galleries in Germany. Flooded with light, spacious, modern and well-kept, the Post Galerie has presented itself since 2001 as a nationally known, unique shopping mall with a total of over 50 different specialty shops, stores and restaurants. In November 2012, the Irish textile supplier PRIMARK opened its first branch in Baden-Württemberg in the Post Galerie. Ettlinger Tor, a few meters south of the market square, is a large shopping mall with many shops. It is said that the region around Karlsruhe has one of the best kitchens in Germany. Influenced by the surrounding regions, especially Alsace and Switzerland, there are a variety of interesting dishes. In most regional restaurants and beer gardens you can get typical dishes such as meat loaf in different variations, Maultaschen, and tarte flambée. Typical side dishes are potato salad, spaetzle, sauerkraut and pretzels.

- Bad Wildbad[1] (ca. 50 km): schöne Stadt mit Kur- und Bädereinrichtungen samt Wellnessbereich, Baumwipfelpfad Schwarzwald, Hängebrücke-Wildline, Standseil Bergbahn.
- Bad Wildbad-Aichelberg (ca. 60 km): Jugendstilkirche (1907), Fautsburg, Fautsburgrundwanderweg, jährlich am 24.12. Waldweihnacht mit lebender Krippe.
