Constancy is in the extreme south Baden-Württemberg and is the largest city on Lake Constance, where the Rhine flows from Lake Constance into the Submarine overflows. Constance borders the Swiss city Kreuzlingen.

Konstanz is the largest city on Lake Constance and belongs to Swimming. The city is located at the point where the Rhine flows out of the Obersee of Lake Constance, the so-called Constance funnel, and west of the city in the Submarine flows into it. The 30 km long headland ends in the northwest Bodanrück, which separates the Untersee and Gnadensee from the Überlinger See in the north.

The old town of Konstanz is located south of the Konstanz funnel, which is actually on the Swiss side, while younger districts are on the tip of the Bodanrück. This particular geographical location alone explains why Konstanz has a strong traditional relationship with its Swiss environs. Zurich is easier to reach than the state capital Stuttgart. Visitors who are not familiar with the area should not make the mistake of referring to Constance residents as Swabians. Constance is part of Baden, and that is sometimes taken very seriously.

Day tourists like to visit Constance in summer, not least because of the nearby ones Mainau Island, which is known for its well-kept and flower-filled park. Because of the lake, it usually doesn't get too hot in summer. The winters are rather mild, but notorious for long periods of fog. The Allannian carnival (Carnival) is traditionally strongly cultivated in Constance. On the Thursday before Mardi Gras (Schmotzige Dunschtig) public life comes to a complete standstill. The streets then belong to the fools. In a somewhat weaker form, this also applies to the following three days, while normality returns on Rose Monday and Shrove Tuesday.

history

Founded by Emperor Constantius Chlorus in the 4th century, Konstanz rose to become the bishopric of the largest diocese in Germany in 590. At the time of the Council of Constance from 1414 to 1418, the political and spiritual world of the West came together here to discuss the great church reform with the participation of the German and Bohemian King Sigismund. With the election of Pope Martin V, the end of the forty-year schism in the church was reached. The council went down in history with the condemnation and execution at the stake of the Bohemian reformer Jan Hus in 1415.

In the street

From Germany to To sing on the Federal highway 81, then on an expressway to a few kilometers before Constance. The rest of the way is a country road with frequent traffic jams, especially during the busy tourist season.

From Switzerland via the Autobahn 7 drive directly to the national border. From there it is about a kilometer to the old town (attention: high risk of traffic jams!). A tip for those arriving from Switzerland: park the car at the large car park on Seestrasse in Kreuzlingen (near the Bodensee-Arena, an ice hockey stadium right on the lake, just before the national border). From there it is only a short walk across the state border (green border) to Konstanz train station (approx. 10 minutes), where the old town begins.

By boat

The car ferry between Konstanz / Allmansdorf and Meersburg runs during the day in shuttle service, at night every hour. Travel time 15 minutes. During the day, bus line 1 runs between the ferry port and the old town of Constance. There are further connections for pedestrians and cyclists from the town port near the old town (directly at the train station) Friedrichshafen and to Reichenau Island With Schaffhausen. Since 2005, it has also been possible to use the fast and convenient connection by catamaran to Friedrichshafen. The catamaran drives across the lake and you have a beautiful view of the water and mountain landscape. Bicycles can also be taken along.

By bicycle

On foot

The Hus-Museum Konstanz is the end point of the Hus-Wegswhich of Prague above Bärnau, Nuremberg and Ulm leads to Lake Constance.

mobility

The old town of Constance suffers from a lack of parking spaces. The prices in the multi-storey car parks are quite high (e.g. in the Fischmarkt multi-storey car park € 7 for 5 hours). Bicycles and motorbikes have it a little easier here.

The old town can be explored on foot, so there is no need for motorization here. It is easily accessible due to the close proximity to the train station and the harbor.

All Bus routes only have one terminus. From there you drive to the old town, circle it in a loop and return to the terminus. Thus, every point in the old town can be easily reached. Since the municipal utilities have a good source of income in the car ferry, bus trips are rather cheap. Single and multi-trip tickets are available from the machine at every bus stop.

Important bus routes are:

  • 1: Ferry port.
  • 4: Mainau Island.
  • 5: Hörnle.
  • 9: University.
  • 908: Kreuzlingen (CH) to Landschlacht (CH).
