Radolfzell on Lake Constance is located on the northwest bay of the Zellersee which is part of the Submarine and this is the western part of the Lake Constance is. The city is 23 kilometers northwest of Constancy and 13 kilometers east of Singing (Hohentwiel) away.

The city was founded in 826 by Bishop Radolf von Verona as Cella Ratoldi. Market and coinage rights were granted around 1100 and city rights in 1267. In the period that followed, the remains of the city wall with four towers were built. Finally, in 1415, Radolfzell became an imperial city. From 1609 until its dissolution in 1806, the knightly canton of Hegau had its seat in Radolfzell, then the city first became part of Württemberg, only a few years later it became Baden.

In 1974 the former communities of Böhringen, Güttingen, Liggeringen, Markelfingen, Möggingen and Stahringen were incorporated, and Radolfzell became a major district town.
