The Mainau Island is the third largest island in Lake Constance. The flower island is located in the northwestern part of Lake Constance, the Überlinger See in the north of Constancy.
background
In 1930 the Swedish Count Bernadotte inherited the former Maien-Aue from the Reichenau monks and turned it into one of the most beautiful gardens in Europe.

Tourist Attractions
The 46 hectare flower island in Überlinger See is transformed into a lush, exotic plant paradise every year from March to October. Due to the favorable climate of Lake Constance, palm trees and other Mediterranean plants such as bananas, lemon and orange trees from all over the world grow on the teardrop-shaped island in the castle park, alongside artfully arranged flower arrangements. The island exudes a southern flair because there is almost no frost. The main attractions are the rose garden, the tropical garden, the tree collection (arboretum) of rare trees from all over the world in Mainau with more than 500 different species and the Mediterranean terrace.
At the highest point of the island is the baroque castle, in which the count family lives like a prince. It was built by the German Order of Knights from 1739-46. The centerpiece is the former audience hall. The so-called “White Hall”, which is kept in white and gold, did not get its present appearance until 1883. The popular music weeks take place here.
The palm house protects the trees all year round with an elaborate glass construction. More than 20 species of palm grow here, including a Canary Island date palm over 15 meters high. Mainau gardeners are well known as breeders of new forms of garden plants. They make the "Mainau-Kinderland" with oversized animals from thousands of flowers.
