Friedrichshafen is a center in the Baden-Württemberg, a federated state in the southeast of Germany.

Friedrichshafen (pronunciation: friːdrɪçshaːfən or frɪdrɪçsˈhaːfən) offers a wide range of aviation-related attractions and museums. It also has one of the longest riverside walks on the lake.

Geographical notes

Friedrichshafen is located on the northeastern corner of the Lake Constance (Bodensee), near the widest point of the lake in the German federal state of Baden-Württemberg. It also has nice views of Austria, Switzerland and the alps on a clear day beyond the lake.

Friedrichshafen is a town that lives mainly in the summer. It attracts for Lake Constance, attracting many Germans due to the fact that the average temperatures are among the highest in Germany. While in the winter the city is less active.

Background

The city played a pivotal role in aviation history, as Graf Ferdinand von Zeppelin developed and built his famous airships that ruled the skies in the early 20th century and where similar small airships have still been made today. By plane

On boat

  • 4 Friedrichshafen harbor (Friedrichshafen Hafen). There are several ferries that connect the shores of the lake. In 45 minutes by ferry you can reach it Romanshorn on the Swiss side of the lake. How to get around

The city of Friedrichshafen covers a fairly large area along the lake side and inland. The evangelical church
  • 3 Schlosskirche (Evangelical Church). The Schlosskirche with its two 55 m high domed towers made of Rorschach sandstone is the landmark of Friedrichshafen. It was built by Christian Thumb from 1695 to 1701 and belongs to the famous Baroque buildings of Upper Swabia. Since 1812 it has been a Protestant church. In 1944 it was partially destroyed by air raids, rebuilt from 1947 to 1951 and then returned to the Protestant community.

What to do

A walk along the lake is one of the best things to do
  • 1 Walk along the lakefront. Walk along the lakefront from the east of the harbor to the Evangelist church (to the west).
  • Go cycling. Rent a bicycle (see Gasthof Rebstock below) or bring your own and cycle along the lake to Meersburg (west) or Lindau (east). The cycle path to Lindau is more pleasant, since it is not necessary to follow the main road. It is also quite popular to take a tour around the entire lake in one (for a sportsman with shortcuts), two (a reasonable amount of time), or three or more days.

Friedrichshafen is a rather quiet city, the only part a little more degraded is the station square, often a meeting place for stragglers and time wasters, with frequent police interventions although everything is always kept at a rather high level of security.
