Zurich (in GermanZürich) is the largest city in the Switzerland, with a population of approximately 400,000 people in the city and 1.3 million in the metropolitan area. Zurich is located on Lake Zurich, where the lake meets the Limmat River in northern Switzerland. Contrary to what some believe, Zurich is not the capital of Switzerland - this honor falls to Bern.
To know
Zurich is the largest city in Switzerland and a cultural center of German-speaking Switzerland. Although it is only the administrative capital of its canton, Zürich it passes well above its weight in terms of large media and business headquarters, being at the center of the train network that is excessively punctual and meticulously maintained. It is also home to Switzerland's most important airport, and is often the first place in Switzerland to be visited. Zürich it is close to some of the finest ski resorts in the Swiss Alps and many people don't spend much time in Zurich, but it will take at least a couple of days to visit.
While Zurich can be expensive, it is also clean, efficient, and blessed with a high standard of living which, coupled with high wages, explains why people put up with the high prices. Zurich has attracted people from the rest of Switzerland for centuries, but in the 20th and 21st centuries it also began to train both people and companies from outside Switzerland and in some cases even outside Europe. This means that you will hear more languages other than Swiss German and the overall atmosphere is much more cosmopolitan than you might think.
Zurich is home to ETH Zurich, one of the most important technical universities in the world, which has produced numerous Nobel prizes and numerous innovations and thanks to the long history of Switzerland's neutrality, it also houses the headquarters of FIFA and the International Ice Hockey Federation. Zurich is also home to several large banking and insurance conglomerates that have grown on Swiss banking secrecy and still enjoy a good reputation in the financial sector.
Geographical notes
Zurich is located at the northern limit of the lake of the same name, where the river Limmat abandons the lake itself. A little further north, at the largest park in Zurich, the Platzspitz, the river Sihl, coming from the southwest, flows into the Limmat.
To the west the city extends along the Limmat valley. To the north, Zurich extends beyond the mountains Zürichberg is Käferberg, up to the Glatt valley. The eastern limit instead is set by the mountains Adlisberg is Uetliberg.
How to orient yourself
The old town (Alstadt) extends on both banks of the Limmat river, an emissary of Lake Zurich. From the second half of the 19th century the city expanded in all directions.
Left bank - The most important artery of the left (or western) bank is the Bahnofstrasse, an avenue with rows of lime trees overlooked by banks and luxury shops. It goes from the station square to the Bürkliplatz with the viewpoint over the lake and the pier where the boats stop.
To the east of Bahnofstrasse, the courtyard area extends towards the riverside Lindenhof, part of the Alstadt, the old town of Zurich. Here was located theoppidum from Roman times. It was restored in the time of the Carolingians but today no trace remains. The heart of the district is Münsterhof, the square dominated by the Gothic bulk of the Fraumünster, the church whose stained glass windows were made by artists Marc Chagall is Augusto Giacometti)
Right bank - Crossing one of the numerous bridges over the Limmat you enter the district of Niederdorf, always part of the old town and very lively in the evening due to the presence of numerous clubs. In the center of the district stands the Grossmünster church. The main street in the district is the Niederdorfstrasse, which runs parallel to the Limmatquai, the riverside where they overlook, beyond the town hall (Rathaus) and the Wasserkirche (water church), ancient headquarters of medieval guilds (the guilds, Zunft in German). Also on the right bank, Seefeld is a park area. There is the Opera House (Opernhaus Zürich)

- 1 Zurich airport (Flughafen Zürich - ZRH) (11 km north of the city). The most important Swiss airport with over 20 million passengers per year.
- Most major airlines fly to Zurich but the former Swiss flag carrier (now owned by Lufthansa) is still the largest airline in ZRH and offers the widest range of connections. Almost every major hotel in Zurich offers shuttle buses from the airport to your hotel. The stops for these buses are just a few steps to the right from the arrivals of Terminal 1.
- The companies that in 2012 operated flights from Italy to Zurich airport were the following:
- Alitalia CityLiner (from 1st Nov 2012) - From Rome Fiumicino.
- Helvetic Airways - From Bari, Toast-Casale, Lamezia Terme, Olbia.
- Swiss International Air Lines - From Rome-Fiumicino, Milan Malpensa, Venice, Florence is Catania.
- Zurich Airport offers free WiFi for all guests for up to two hours. You need a mobile phone capable of receiving SMS in Switzerland. Travelers must connect to the "ZurichAirport" network and register their mobile number. The user will receive the access code via a text message. After the free hour, there is a five hour waiting period before you can access the next free hour.
- The airport has an underground train station that connects the city center in 10 minutes, trains run every 10-15 minutes during the day, but less frequently in the hours before or after. A single ticket to the Hauptbahnhof (main station, a.k. "Zürich HB") costs Fr. 6.80 (approx. € 6). You can also get to the center by tram taking line 10 with a ticket for Zone 110 (the city center). The 30-minute ticket is insufficient.
- There are also several buses that take you to various parts of the region of Winterthur.
- 2 Memmingen airport. A cheaper alternative could be this airport located in Bavaria and 200 km away. Ryanair operates at the small airport with flights from Rome-Ciampino and other seasonal flights from Alghero and Trapani. A shuttle bus service connects the airport to Memmingen with Zurich. You will find information on the website of the bus lines that take care of the service http://www.expressbus.ch. Buses terminate on Ausstellungsstrasse at the corner of Hafnerstrasse, near the station.
You can reach Zurich by boat on the lake from Rapperswil (2 hours) or from Horgen (45 minutes). However, this is more of a boat used for leisure and in fact only offers a couple of trips each day.
On the train
![](http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/thumb/9/93/Zuerich_Hauptbahnhof.jpg/220px-Zuerich_Hauptbahnhof.jpg)
- 3 Zurich Central Station (Zürich Hauptbahnhof). The train station and shopping mall (downstairs) connected to the subway have shops, restaurants and a grocery store that locals use when they need to do Sunday shopping, as it is not subject to the closing hours otherwise in effect in the city . It also hosts a Christmas market and other events in the large entrance hall. Under the big clock everyone usually meets, being the most visible place in the station. Inside the structure there is the tourist information office.
- In the station there are some 24-hour lockers in level B1 available for Fr. 6-9 for 24 hours (maximum 3 days), for luggage storage. In addition, the station has a free WIFI service for one hour. To browse, you must provide your mobile number and receive an authentication SMS. All the toilets in the station are subject to a fee, around 1.5 Fr.Provide coins to access the turnstile.
- From Milan 7 Eurocity depart daily for Zurich. They take an average of 3 hours and 40. Consult the site of Trenitalia for details.
By bus
- 4 Zurich main bus station (Sihlquai) (Close to the Central Station). Many economic connections are guaranteed with Flixbus from / to various destinations: Italy, Germany and Switzerland itself.
How to get around
The main train station, the old town and the waterfront and all nearby tourist attractions are within easy walking distance. You may find that you don't need transportation for most of your sightseeing needs once you enter the city.
By public transport
![](http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/thumb/3/34/Tramnetz-zuerich2.png/400px-Tramnetz-zuerich2.png)
Zurich has with its central station the largest and most important public transport hub in Switzerland. Almost all international and national trains pass through its 16 main tracks, such as the EuroCity, Cisalpino, TGV, ICE and CityNightLine. 870 national and international connections pass through here every day.
The very efficient public transport uses local S-Bahn trains (13 stations within the city), tram (16 lines) and bus (22 lines). The company that manages them is the Verkehrsbetriebe Zürich (VBZ).
Tickets and options
Foreign visitors are offered the Zürich Card in cuts of 24 and 72 hours. In addition to the free use of public transport, the card grants discounted admission to city museums. However, it does not entitle you to use night buses.
Timetable information for Switzerland can be found at sbb.ch or they can be obtained using the SBB app for iPhone or Android (requires internet connection). The application Free Wemlin on iPhone come on Android gives you offline access to timetable information and transport network maps for the Canton of Zurich, and is therefore ideal for use in case you don't want to use data roaming.
The system is divided into numerous fare zones, with the city center and the nearest suburbs located in zone 110 and the outer suburbs located in other zones (e.g. Winterthur is in zone 120) and the more zones you pass, the more you should pay for the trip. There are single tickets, day passes, monthly passes and annual passes. Monthly and annual cards are commonly referred to as ZVV NetzPass.
Tickets must be purchased from a ticket machine before boarding or from one of the sales tickets at the ticket offices. The ticket machines are in German, English, French and Italian and offer almost all regular tickets available (not personal tickets though). Select the zones you wish to switch to when purchasing your ticket, with a zone map in each car, as well as clearly the instructions that come to your aid, then choose! The ticket gives you access to all means of transport.
If you stay for a longer period, consider a Monthly ZVV NetzPass, because it is the cheapest of all. When traveling to all zones, you only need to save the 8-day cards for the monthly card. A 24-hour ticket for zone 110 costs the same as two single journeys.
If you don't mind starting your travel after 09:00, the "ZVV-9-UhrPass" is the best option. It's available as a day, monthly and yearly pass and will save you a lot of money compared to other similar regular cards, especially since the 9am rule doesn't apply on weekends.
There are also so-called Z-passes, which can be used not only in Zurich, but also in one of the neighboring cantons (Aargau, Schaffhausen, Schwyz, Zug, St. Gallen or Thurgau); however, it is only possible to add one more canton, so if you don't go to a canton closer more often than the others, a regular card of all areas of Zürich is probably best and buying a single ticket from the last valid station to your final destination . The Z-pass system also has its own zones, including in neighboring cantons. It is only available as a monthly and annual card and cannot be purchased at ticket machines. For full rate details, see the ZVV home page linked above.
The Swiss Travel Pass (not to be confused with the SwissPass) is valid for all public transport in Zurich and, if you are a tourist visiting most of Switzerland, this can be your best way to save money and time spent trying to understand the zones, routes and fare options. Eurail passes are only valid on the S-Bahn and ships. Interrail passes are valid on the S-Bahn (although the ZVV website claims a "reduction" for other routes for Interrail holders). However, you may notice that you don't need trams and buses if you don't mind walking around a bit.
If you're on a budget, don't stop too late - the "N" night buses only run on weekends. When they run, they only run once an hour and you have to buy a Nachtzuschlag for 5 Fr from the car and validate it before getting on. On business nights, there is no public transport after around 00:30 (although expensive taxis still exist in case you are stuck).
Avoid reaching / visiting Zurich on 1st May. The city is on vacation on labor day. Trams don't run for half of the day and getting around could be a problem.

By tram and bus
Several tram, trolley and bus lines cover the city at street level. Like all other public transport in Zurich, tickets must be purchased and validated before boarding or risk a fine in case of control. You can find times at each stop which are usually accurate to the minute, however delays occur due to heavy traffic or other factors.
By taxi
Taxis in Zurich are very expensive compared to New York, London and other large cities. Most taxi drivers are rude and uncommunicative. Better a trip by tram, bus or S-bahn. Uber has gained its popularity in Zurich, but has recently stopped its UberX service and now only offers regular service and UberBlack. Taxis are readily available in the city center and at the airport. Taxis in Zurich are organized by several companies. The largest suppliers are "Taxi 444" and "7x7 Fahrdienste":
- Einfach-Pauschal Taxi, ☎ 41 44 210 32 32.
- Züritaxi 7x2 GmbH, ☎ 41 44 222 22 22.
- Taxi Jung (Jung AG), ☎ 41 44 271 11 88.
- 7x7 (yourmile AG), ☎ 41 44 777 77 77.

As an alternative to taxi centers and Uber, two companies in Switzerland offer taxis via the Smartphone application:
Further information is available on the information page on taxi services in Zurich from the Zurich Tourist Board.
In a limousine
Limo service is offered by several companies with licensed limo drivers. Some of the Zurich-based service providers specializing in limousine services are, among others:
- EdelSwiss International Limousinen, @[email protected].
- GLM General Limousine Management, @[email protected].
- LAMIR International GmbH, Weberstrasse 10, ☎ 41 79 403 02 88, @[email protected].
- Traverse Limousine, @[email protected].
- GMC Limousines, @[email protected].
Further information is available inlist of travel service providers in Zurich of the Zurich Tourist Board.
By car
Driving in Zurich is possible but painful because the city center is not easy to travel by car. It is cheaper and more comfortable to park outside the city and take a train.
There are two types of public boat transport in Zürich: river buses and lake boats. River boats only operate in the summer months and lake boats operate on a very small schedule during the winter.
River buses operate between the Landesmuseum (near the Hauptbahnhof) along the Limmat River and out into Lake Zürich (Zürich) to Tiefenbrunnen. There are several stops along the Limmat River.
The Zürichsee Schifffahrtsgesellschaft (ZSG) operates lake vessels (including two restored historic steamships) that depart from Burkliplatz (at the end of Bahnhofstrasse). The ZSG website provides information on destinations and ships. The ZSG offers a variety of tourism-oriented trips (including the Jazz Brunch), a popular trip is a Rapperswil, at the southern end of the Zürichsee. The city has a beautiful castle overlooking the lake surrounded by a medieval city.
On the train
The 'S-Bahn' is Zürich's fastest and most affordable suburban railway system, covering almost all suburbs and beyond. The Zurich S-Bahn system offers fast and comfortable service throughout the region. All lines, except the rural ones, pass through the Hauptbahnhof. The ZVV offers directions for a variety of excursions on the S-Bahn.
You must have a validated ticket before going on board. If you don't have a ticket, you will be liable for an on-site fine of Fr. 100.
By bike
It is generally easy to cycle in Zurich. There are cycle paths throughout much of the city, and if you don't mind the hills, a motorcycle could be a quick and cheap alternative to public transportation. The city has a online map service which allows you to calculate routes for your bicycle and also shows the locations of parking lots and pumps for bicycles. Many of the major intersections do not have cycle paths due to space constraints, but they can generally be avoided. Note that cycling on the sidewalk is not allowed. Cyclists are generally penalized by traffic or for ignoring traffic lights.
Züri rollt offers free bike rental throughout the city. To get a free bike, you need to register with your identity card or passport and pay a refundable deposit of Fr. 20. There are seven stations. Two of them are located in the main station (5 North entrance for bikes is 6 south entrance for bikes) and are used all year round. The rest is operational only from April to October. Two of them are located near the historic center a 7 Globus Cityit's at 8 Bellevue. Opening hours vary from station to station, but most of them operate daily from 09:00 to 21:30.
O-Bike is a bike sharing service from a Chinese start-up that is new to the city. It is a free parking system throughout the city. To unlock them you need their application and a deposit of Fr. 130. After that it allows you to rent bicycles for Fr. 1.50 for half an hour.

Safety
How to keep in touch
Internet
Le stazioni ferroviarie più grandi della città (tra cui la stazione principale e Stadelhofen) offrono un'ora di connessione internet wireless gratuita per stazione per 3 ore. Devi essere in grado di ricevere un messaggio di testo per una registrazione unica.
