  • 7 Bastion of the Knights of Malta (Bastion of Malta), Via Antio Cappelli - Lamezia Terme. It is so called because it arose in the fief of the Knights of Jerusalem, a sacred military order that defended Christianity from Muslim attacks for centuries, which subsequently took the name of the Holy Order of the Knights of Rhodes and, finally, of Malta, after it had from Emperor Charles V the free fief of the Maltese island. (E. Borrello, Sambiase…, page 195) The mighty structure was built around 1550 by the viceroy of Naples, Pedro di Toledo, and was part of a complex defensive system put in place on the coasts of the entire Kingdom to defend itself from frequent Turkish raids, which sowed terror on the coasts of southern Italy. These raids were brought to an end only in the first decades of the twentieth century with the Anglo - French occupation of North Africa and Asia Minor. Unlike many other defense structures located along the Calabrian coast, the Bastion was not a simple coastal watchtower, but was equipped with war machines and capable of housing a garrison of soldiers. This is confirmed by the engraving, placed by the Balivo Fra Signorino Gattinara, in the year 1634, located above the entrance, on a marble placed next to a coat of arms depicting a crowned eagle with open wings, symbol of the Gattinara family, which thus reads: “F. Signorinus Gattinara Sa.Eufemia Baiulatus Briorargi G.D.L.M.B.N. imposuit bellicis instrumentis munivit A. D. M.D.C.XXXIIII ″. The identical heraldic emblem is placed on the facade of the church of Sant'Eufemia Vetere, above the portal of the temple, which was built by Gattinara after the destruction of the nearby Benedictine Abbey by the violent earthquake of 1638. (Ibidem ... ) Released intact from the devastating earthquakes of 1638, 1783 and 1905, as well as from the many invasions that the territory underwent, the Bastion of the Knights of Malta fulfilled its last military function in the summer of 1943, when, by the Italian Army, they came sentry boxes were built on the terrace, still present today, which housed an anti-aircraft post to fight in vain the Anglo-American bombers in the days preceding the armistice of 8 September. Today, this imposing war structure, located in a wheat field, is a symbol of peace and unity. For no other reason was it chosen as the emblem of the city of Lamezia Terme, the result of the merger of three ancient municipalities. The bulwark has a square plan and consists of two floors and a terrace on the surface. The upper level, parallelepiped in shape, rests on a truncated pyramid, which represents the ground floor, whose walls are inclined by 9 degrees with respect to the vertical axis. At the base, the emerged one, the external perimeter measures 17.5 x 17.5 meters, but it must be considered that the structure is buried several meters: in fact it was once surrounded by a moat and accessed via a drawbridge. The height, taking into account the sentries sentries placed on the terrace, is about 16 meters. The entrance is placed, as usual, on the side opposite the sea, consisting of an opening with a round arch, surmounted by a window. On the other sides, on the ground floor, there are small rectangular slits and windows with semicircular vaults on the first floor.
Currently, the Fortress is in an excellent state of conservation, almost not feeling the weight of its centuries, and since 2014 it has returned - after a period in private hands - to public availability following the purchase by the Municipality of Lamezia Terme. . The visit of its interiors is currently forbidden due to renovations; works that, started in 2014, have not yet been carried out due to various problems that have never been fully clarified to citizens. The external view is, however, always possible, because the mighty fortress is located 5 meters from the roadway of the provincial road n. 99 (formerly 18 dir), 150 meters from the entrance of said local artery, which is accessed with a left turn (on a special central lane), following the indication "Gizzeria" on the wide intersection between km 371 and km 372 of the SS18 (Bivio Marinella), that is one hundred meters beyond the bridge over the Spilinga stream (coming from the north), which represents the southern limit of the town of Gizzeria Lido, as well as the beginning of the municipal territory of Lamezia Terme.
