Salerno is a city of Campania.
To know
Geographical notes
The city rises on the homonymous gulf of the Tyrrhenian Sea, between the Amalfi Coast (to the west) and the Sele plain and the Cilento (to the south), at the point where the Irno valley opens towards the sea.
From the orographic point of view, the municipal area is very varied, in fact it goes from sea level up to 953 meters of Mount Stella. The inhabited area develops along the coast and extends inland to the hills behind it.
The city is crossed by the river Irno, which until the middle of the last century marked its eastern border and from which, probably, its name derives. Another watercourse that flows in the municipal area is the Picentino river, which to the east of Salerno separates the city itself from the neighboring one. Pontecagnano Faiano.
When to go
The climate is typically Mediterranean, with mild, rainy winters and moderately hot summers.
Due to its conformation, winds of a certain intensity are generated, especially in the period between summer and autumn; while in winter there are incursions of cold air from the Balkans.

- 2 Salerno Cathedral, Via Roberto il Guiscardo, Salerno. Built in the 11th century at the behest of Roberto il Guiscardo and Bishop Alfano I, probably on the site of a previous pagan religious building. Very interesting, from an architectural and artistic point of view, is the bell tower in Arab-Norman style, 52 meters high and commissioned in the 12th century by Archbishop Guglielmo da Ravenna.
- 3 Church of Sant'Andrea de Lavina, Vicolo delle Galesse. Built in honor of its patron by the Amalfi people deported to the city by Sicardo.
- 4 Church of Santa Maria de Lama, Vicolo Duca Ruggiero. Built on a previous construction of the Roman era and which retains the only traces of Lombard painting still existing in the city.
- 5 Church of the Most Holy Crucifix, Giacomo Matteotti Square. From the 13th century, with a basilica layout, it was once connected to the monastery of San Benedetto, from the Lombard period and in Romanesque style.
- 6 Church of the Mount of the Dead, Via Bastioni. Sixteenth-century church, characterized by an octagonal plan, unusual in the city.
- 7 Church of San Filippo Neri, Via Bastioni. Sixteenth-century church, characterized by an octagonal plan, unusual in the city.
- 8 Church of San Giorgio, Via Duomo. From the early '700 commonly defined as "the most beautiful baroque church" in the city, it houses the relics of the holy martyrs of Salerno Santa Tecla, Archelaa and Susanna and with paintings by Andrea Sabatini.
- 9 Church of the Santissima Annunziata. Built in 1627 to replace a previous fifteenth-century church that was destroyed by an earthquake. Currently (2013) undergoing restoration, it stands out for the fine bell tower designed by Ferdinando Sanfelice.
Palaces and buildings
- 10 Pedace Palace, Via Portacatena.
- 11 Arechi Castle, Location Croce. Symbol of the city, built in the late Roman or Byzantine age, which became the cornerstone of the triangular defensive system of the city with the Lombard prince Arechi II, from whom it takes its name, who transferred the court of the Principality of Benevento to Salerno. Subsequently enlarged and fortified, the manor was never conquered. It currently houses a museum, accommodation and congress activities and is a hub for nature trails and equipped paths.
- 12 The Carnal, Lungomare Clemente Tafuri, Torrione. Another strong symbol of the city is the Carnale, a cavalry tower built in 1569 on a promontory (from which the fort takes its name) originally connected to the Bellara hill. The Carnale also served as a lookout tower, in relation to the other lookout towers of the Amalfi Coast and Cilento, against Saracen raids.
- 13 Medieval aqueduct. Built by the Lombards in the 9th century, to supply the monastery of San Benedetto and, through an underground passage, the Piantanova convent. It consists of two branches, one coming from the north and one from the east, which join in via Arce and continue south towards the monastery.
