How to orient yourself

The city of Catanzaro extends over three hills overlooking the Gulf of Squillace

The main artery of the historic center is Corso Giuseppe Mazzini which starts from Piazza Garibaldi where viale Carlo V meets and leads to the Catanzaro Pratica station below. Corso Mazzini ends in Piazza Roma, leaving the cathedral on the left and the modern Politeama theater on the right.

Neighborhoods of the historic center are "Greece", so called because it welcomed Greek-speaking people who had abandoned their coastal settlements following the raids of the Saracens. La Maddalena it is the neighborhood around Via Filanda, where the silk factories were. The very ventilated position of the district ensured the manufacturers the perfect success of the product.

Case Ass is the neighborhood around the church of San Giovanni Battista, on the site of the former Norman castle. In ancient times the district was called paradise because of the views over the Gulf of Squillace. The current name originates from a fire set off in 1461 by order of the Marquis Centelles who had to face a rebellion by the citizens of Catanzaro.

Other areas of interest
