Catanzaro is the capital of the Calabria.

Geographical notes
Catanzaro overlooks the Gulf of Squillace, in the Ionian Sea.The territory extends from the sea up to a height of about 600 meters and includes a coastal area on the Ionian Sea that hosts 8 km of beach and a tourist port, hence the center inhabited goes up the valley up to the three hills on which stands the historic center of the city. Due to its particular orography, the municipal area is bathed by the sea, but subject to snow in winter.
Catanzaro borders on: Borgia, Carafe of Catanzaro, Gimigliano, Pentone, San Floro, Sellia, Settingiano, Simeri Crichi is Tiriolo.
When to go
The hotels, especially those lined up on the coast of Catanzaro, charge high season rates in the summer with peaks in August when the beaches from Soverato to Catanzaro Lido swarm with holidaymakers, especially young people.
How to orient yourself
The city of Catanzaro extends over three hills overlooking the Gulf of Squillace
The main artery of the historic center is Corso Giuseppe Mazzini which starts from Piazza Garibaldi where viale Carlo V meets and leads to the Catanzaro Pratica station below. Corso Mazzini ends in Piazza Roma, leaving the cathedral on the left and the modern Politeama theater on the right.
Neighborhoods of the historic center are "Greece", so called because it welcomed Greek-speaking people who had abandoned their coastal settlements following the raids of the Saracens. La Maddalena it is the neighborhood around Via Filanda, where the silk factories were. The very ventilated position of the district ensured the manufacturers the perfect success of the product.
Case Ass is the neighborhood around the church of San Giovanni Battista, on the site of the former Norman castle. In ancient times the district was called paradise because of the views over the Gulf of Squillace. The current name originates from a fire set off in 1461 by order of the Marquis Centelles who had to face a rebellion by the citizens of Catanzaro.

Catanzaro Lido is the coastal district of Catanzaro. Its promenade extends for about 2 km on the Gulf of Squillace and is full of hotels, restaurants and night clubs.
