Vibo Valentia is the capital of the province of the same name in the southern italian region Calabria.
background
The city is located on a high plateau on the north side of Calabria about 6 kilometers from the Tyrrhenian Sea.
In the 7th century BC. becomes the place under the name Hipponium colonized by Greeks. Around 200 BC. he comes under the rule of the Romans and is now called Vibo Valentia. The Normans build the fort around 1100. In 1235, the Staufer Emperor Friedrich II had the Castell and the city expanded; the city is now called Monteleone di Calabria. In 1928 it was given the name again Vibo Valentia.

The nearest airport is that Lamezia Terme Airport(IATA: SUF) in Calabrian Lamezia Terme 45 km away, which is served not only by Alitalia but also by numerous low-cost airlines.
By train / bus
The 1 Vibo Valentia-Pizzo F.S. is on the railway line Rome - Naples - Reggio di Calabria resp. Sicily the Trenitalia (Website with timetable information). The ride from Rome to Vibo Valentia-Pizzo station takes a single change in Lamezia between six and seven hours.
The train station is about 8 km from the city center in the north of the city near the coastal town Pizzo, the railway line crosses under the peninsula on which Vibo Valentia is located, mostly in tunnels. Vibo Valentia city center can be reached from the train station by bus or taxi.
The trains of the coastline Lamezia Terme - Tropea - Rosarno also stop in the coastal town belonging to Vibo 2 Vibo Marina F.S. with its marina, from there the distance up to the city center of Vibo is several kilometers.

The coastal highway A3Naples - Salerno - Cosenza (95 km north of Vibo) - Lamezia Terme - Reggio di Calabria (95 km south of Vibo) leaves the coastline shortly before the ascent to Vibo Valentia to circle the peninsula with Tropea in the hinterland.
