Located in the eastern part of the Plain of Gioia Tauro, about 70 km southeast of Catanzaro and about 50 northeast of Reggio Calabria, rises on the slopes of the mountain massif ofAspromonte, with a predominantly hilly area in the north and flat in the south.
The urban center develops near the two main streams of the city. The main stream that flows in the territory of the municipality of Polistena is the Vacal, a tributary of the river Metramo. Another torrent is it Jerapotamo, a tributary of the Vacale torrent, today covered by the Viale Revolution d'Ottobre.
Background
Formerly known as Santa Marina, it arose under the Empire of the East; the founders of this city do not know if they were the inhabitants of Altano or of Locri, however, it is known that the ruins of Altano were located three miles from Polistena.
Objects from the Neolithic era have been found in the area, while other more recent finds have made it possible to identify the presence of Roman settlements.
The first documents attesting the existence of Polistena date back to the 11th century, when a village with this name was named on the occasion of a sale of some land to the monastery of Santa Maria di Campoforano. In the Middle Ages it was the seat of numerous families, including that of the Milan Franco d'Aragona and then Riario Sforza.
