history

The traces of Horgen go back to the age of the pile dwellers. Even an entire culture was named after the community based on exciting finds, the Horgen culture. Originally the place was called Horga, which means "from the swamps". In the Middle Ages, Horgen benefited from its favorable location and was used as a transshipment point for goods by hem merchants. After the Reformation it was briefly uneasy because of conflicts with the Catholic interior, the whole culminating in the time of Napoleon in Buck war. Since these events it has mostly remained quiet, only the construction of the railway drew attention with a few complications. Today Horgen is an energy city and a lively place on the lake.
