Stuttgart is the capital of Baden-Württemberg, a federated state in the southeast of Germany.

To know

Stuttgart is a city surrounded by greenery, which gives it a very pleasant air. The city center occupies a valley surrounded by wooded hills a short distance from the west bank of the Neckar River, a tributary of the Rhine. The altitude in the city ranges from 207m to 549m. To overcome the difference in height, many steps known locally as Stäffele were built.

When to go

The climate of Stuttgart is continental in nature, which means not only strong annual but also diurnal temperature variations. The rains are distributed throughout the year but are more abundant in the summer months.

Background

Stuttgart owes its origins to Liudolfo of Swabia, son of Otto I of Saxony, Holy Roman Emperor from 962 to 973.

From the beginning of 1300, the city became the seat of the counts of Württemberg who two centuries later acquired the title of dukes. In 1806 the duchy was transformed into a kingdom that first formed part of the confederation of the Rhine and then of the Germanic empire despite the fierce opposition of its sovereign to the hegemonic aims of Prussia. The kingdom was dissolved at the end of the 1st World War.

The name of Stuttgart is linked to the star of the automobile industry that rose on the horizon in the second half of the 19th century. Gottlieb Daimler (1834 - 1900) was the creator of the internal combustion engine and the founder of Daimler-Benz, the parent company of Mercedes-Benz.

Robert Bosch (1861 - 1942)) was the creator of the first electric spark generating device that triggered the combustion necessary to set the engine into action.

Finally in April 1931, Ferdinand Porsche, set up the nucleus of the company that bears his surname in Stuttgart.

How to orient yourself

The center of Stuttgart (Stuttgart-Mitte) hinges on Schloßplatz, a large square dominated on its eastern side by the New Castle (Neue Schloss), residence of the representatives of the Württemberger dynasty between the 18th and 19th centuries.

The main street in the center is Königstrasse, transformed into a pedestrian area as well as the contiguous streets and squares. The artery, 1.2 km long, runs from the railway station in a southwest direction.

A point of reference can be constituted by the television tower 217 m high. which stands out on a hill south of the center.

Other highlights of the center are given below:

  • Schillerplatz - Dedicated to the poet Friedrich Schiller whose statue stands out in the center. Schillerplatz is located just south of Schloßplatz. It overlooks the old castle (Altes Schloss) which today houses the collections of the state museum and the collegiate church.
  • Stuttgarter Marktplatz - Further south is the Marktplatz overlooked by the town hall, a modern version of an older one, destroyed by bombs during World War II.
  • Park of the Castle (Schlossgarten) - The park that from the side of the railway station stretches for km in a north-easterly direction until it touches the banks of the Neckar river.

Other neighborhoods

  • Bad Cannstatt - Located on the east bank of the Neckar River, Bad Cannstatt is home to the botanical gardens, Rosenstein Castle and the Mercedes-Benz Museum. The park on the banks of the river is the scene of numerous events, first and foremost the beer festival which attracts millions of visitors between the end of September and the beginning of October.
  • Zuffenhausen - Seven km north of the center is the suburb of Zuffenhausen which houses another museum dedicated to the automobile, the Porsche Museum

How to get around

By public transport

Cogwheel train terminus at Marienplatz
The Stuttgart funicular

Stuttgart has a light rail system known as the Stuttgart Stadtbahn. The lines in operation are 15, from 4:45 am to 1:00 am, the map is downloadable here. At the center and in other areas, the route is underground. Added to this is a network of suburban trains known as the "Stuttgart S-Bahn", useful for those who need to travel from one suburb to another. The company that manages the metro, buses and trams is the SSB (Stuttgarter Straßenbahnen AG)

Public transportation also includes funiculars (Standseilbahn) and a rack railway (Zahnradbahn) that climbs the hills south of the center. Getting on the cogwheel train is a must for any visitor. Go up to the Marienplatz terminus, shown in the photo on the right. Still to the delight of tourists, a miniature train pulled by a diesel locomotive but which at weekends is replaced by a steam one, climbs up the Killesberg, a hill northwest of the center.

As for fares, a single ticket costs € 1.40, children from 6 to 14 years pay reduced. Tageskarte is the ticket that allows travel on all public transport within a day but is limited only to central areas and zones 1 and 2. It costs € 5.60, 12 for travel in the entire metropolitan area. The most convenient form is perhaps the 3-day card offered only to those who do not reside permanently in Stuttgart. It costs 9.90 euros for the downtown areas and neighboring districts, 13 for the entire metropolitan area (year 2009).

Absolutely recommended to download the app SSB Move which provides timetables and connections for the entire network in real time.
