Heidelberg at night

Time of the Electors
The Electors of the Palatinate from the Wittelsbach family resided in Heidelberg Castle for five centuries. Ruprecht I founded the Heidelberger in 1386 to his fame Ruprecht-Karls-University. The 7 electors chose the German king. Ruprecht III. was German king from 1400-1410. He was not elected, but raised himself to it, and when he wanted to get absolution from the Pope, he had an accident on the way there.

romance
Heidelberg experienced a second heyday at the beginning of the 19th century. In 1803 the university was renewed. This re-establishment drew students and lecturers to Heidelberg, and the Romantic Transfiguration was shaped by Heidelberg Castle. The historic, great ruin in the middle of the green mountain slope stimulated the young romantic imagination. Although the castle was never rebuilt, it has experienced a second heyday since the Romantic era as one of the most famous castle ruins in Europe.

Local transport

See also: Local transport in Heidelberg (Wikipedia)

The Public transport system in Heidelberg is well developed. There are 5 tram lines and the overland railway line 5 of the OEG (narrow-gauge railway), all operated by the rnv. The overland railway operates in the Rhein-Neckar triangle from Mannheim above Viernheim, Weinheim and Schriesheim to Heidelberg's main traffic junction, Bismarckplatz, and from here directly to Mannheim via the main train station. In addition, it is also possible to use the S-Bahn for inner-city traffic.

The network is supplemented with buses from Rhein-Neckar-Verkehr GmbH (rnv) and Rhein-Neckar-Bus GmbH (BRN), which open up the urban area and some suburbs.

Heidelberg is in Rhein-Neckar transport association (VRN). All local transport services (trains and buses) can be used with standard tickets of the Verkehrsverbund Rhein-Neckar, even if they are provided by different companies. It is also possible to change between different providers with one ticket.

Within the city, tickets of price level 2 are required, for certain inner-city connections there is a reduced short-haul tariff.

A children's ticket must be purchased for dogs or the group card can be expanded to include one person.

Bicycles can be taken on the OEG, trams and city buses Monday to Friday before 6 a.m. and from 9 a.m., all day on Saturdays, Sundays and public holidays. You can take your bike with you on the S-Bahn every day from 9 a.m. and on weekends all day free of charge.

The mountain railways are not integrated into the transport association and have their own prices.

Public transport is operated from 5 a.m. to midnight, there are also early buses and a very good night bus network (Moonliner) on weekends.

In the HeidelbergCard[1] includes all trams and buses in the city, as well as a trip on the Heidelberg mountain railway to the castle and entrance to the castle with a large barrel. It also offers many discounts on other attractions and museums as well as numerous retailers. The card costs for 1 day: € 13.00, 2 days: € 15.00 and 4 days: € 17.00, for families there is a 2-day card for € 32.00. · (As of 2015)

With your own vehicle

Due to its historical, winding architectural style and the long pedestrian zone, the Heidelberg city center should be avoided by foreign drivers. The one-way system is complicated and some streets and most of the parking lots are only for residents. Illegal parkers are rigorously towed away. When visiting the old town, it is therefore advisable to follow the parking guidance system to one of the numerous parking garages. However, these are busy on Saturdays during shopping time and on Saturdays in the early evening during cinema time and may require some waiting time.

You can also drive to the castle. When there is a lot of traffic, however, the entire Schlossberg is often closed. The few parking spaces and authorized parking spaces are located above the castle and are chargeable during the day. A walk of approx. 10 minutes through the castle garden including climbing the stairs must then be accepted. Recommended: Alternatively, you can park the car in one of the parking garages in the city center and the castle with the cable railway (included in the entrance fee for the castle) or on foot (if you are in good physical condition,> 300 steps).

The Castle Road leads through the place.
