Sandhausen is a community in the Electoral Palatinate. It lies in the Rhine plain on the eastern edge of the Hardtwald.

background

Sandhausen was first mentioned in a document in 1262. From 1351 to Reichsdeputationshauptschluss From 1803 the place belonged to the Electoral Palatinate, then to Baden. In 1928 the neighboring village of Bruchhausen was incorporated.

Neighboring towns are Kirchheim (district of Heidelberg), St. Ilgen (district of Glue), Walldorf and Oftersheim.

The name Sandhausen It's no coincidence: the place is located in a landscape in which there have been sand dunes since the last ice age. Much of it has now disappeared, the sand was used as building material, among other things. However, a small part of it is still in the Sand houses dunes which are now designated as a nature reserve.

The sandy soil is suitable for some special crops in agriculture. First and foremost, that should be mentioned asparagus; Sandhausen is not far from the Baden Asparagus Route. The formerly important cultivation of tobacco and hops hardly plays a role today.
