Sinsheim is located on the Elsenz, a river that crosses the Kraichgau and is at Neckargemünd flows into the Neckar.

Stone Age traces have been found in the vicinity of the city, and Celtic settlements have also been proven. The find was more spectacular Jupiter giant column in the Steinsfurt district, which indicates a Roman settlement.

The name is from the year 770 Sunnisheim guaranteed, in 1192 the place got city rights. From 1362 Sinsheim belonged to the Electoral Palatinate.

The former Benedictine monastery on Michaelsberg was converted into a knight's monastery in 1496, soon afterwards it was destroyed in the peasant wars and only partially rebuilt. The tower with its round dome is a landmark of Sinsheim today.

After 1806 Sinsheim became part of the Grand Duchy of Baden. Sinsheim became an official town and later a district town.

During the district reform in 1973, the district of Sinsheim was dissolved, but between 1971 and 1975 some communities were incorporated. These are Adersbach, Dühren, Ehrstädt, Eschelbach, Hasselbach, Hilsbach, Hoffenheim, Serien, Rohrbach, Steinsfurt, Waldangelloch and Weiler. A number of hamlets and residential areas still belong to the urban area. Today the core city of Sinsheim itself has around 12,500 inhabitants, the city as a whole around 35,500.
