Eppingen is a city in Kraichgau in Baden-Wuerttemberg.
background
Eppingen
Eppingen was first mentioned in a document in 985 and was probably made a town as early as 1192. In 1462 it came to the Electoral Palatinate. After a heyday in the 15th and 16th centuries, the 17th century brought hardship and misery with the Thirty Years' War (1618-1648) and the Palatinate War of Succession (1688-1697). From 1693 on, the imperial troops were here under the margrave Ludwig Wilhelm of Baden, the Türkenlouis. The Eppinger Lines, a line of defense from Pforzheim via Eppingen to Neckargemünd, still bear witness to this today.
From 1803 Eppingen came to Baden, in 1879 there was a connection to the railway network to Karlsruhe, 1880 to Heilbronn and from 1899 via Sinsheim to Heidelberg. The district reform of 1973 assigned Eppingen to the district of Heilbronn, the formerly independent communities Adelshofen, Elsenz, Kleingartach, Mühlbach, Richen and Rohrbach were incorporated. Today Eppingen is a major district town with around 22,000 inhabitants, almost half of whom live in the central town.
Districts
- Mühlbach: In the 14th century, Eppingen acquired the hamlets of Ober- and Untermühlbach, which were still separate at the time. It wasn't until 1810 that Mühlbach, which had now grown together, became an independent municipality again. In the following decades sandstones were quarried and hewn in numerous quarries, Mühlbach became widely known as a stone carving village, as the stone carving museum in the old town hall attests to. Even today there are still a few stonemasons in Mühlbach. The place was incorporated by Eppingen in 1972.
- Allotment roof: The place is on the Lein, it once belonged to Baden and came to Württemberg in 1380. Kleingartach is a wine-growing place, it belongs to the Heuchelberg area and thus to the Württemberg wine-growing region.
