Maulbronn is a city in Kraichgau.

background

Maulbronn was founded as a monastery of the Cistercian order in 1147. After the Reformation it was secularized and the monastery became a school and its pupils Johannes Kepler and Hermann Hesse counted. It was not until 1838 that it became an independent municipality in what was then the Kingdom of Württemberg. Since the community reform around 1975, the formerly independent communities Schmie and Zaisersweiher have belonged to the city of Maulbronn.

Maulbronn is known for its Swabian Maultaschen, which are said to have been originally invented by the monks of the Cistercian monastery during Lent. By "wrapping" a dough shell, the meat filling became edible despite the fasting requirement, as it is no longer visible from the outside. Maultaschen can therefore be enjoyed in many variations in the restaurants in and around Maulbronn.
