The World Heritage Cycle Route connects the World Heritage SitesLorsch, Speyer and Maulbronnwhich lie in the border triangle of Hesse, Rhineland-Palatinate and Baden-Württemberg.

  • Length: 168 km
  • Signposting: It is there, but not very good. It is advisable to have an exact cycling map with you.
  • Slopes: The cycle path initially runs in the absolutely flat Rhine plain. In the last section, in the Kraichgau, it gets a little more hilly
  • Path condition: Mostly paved
  • Traffic load: Heavy traffic must be expected on the Rhine bridge in front of Speyer
  • Suitable bike: A normal degree of trekking is sufficient
  • Family suitability: Outside of the towns and cities, most of the people ride on asphalt farm roads or cycle paths
  • Inline suitability: Well

The Imperial Cathedral of Speyer has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1981. The monastery of the Carolingian town of Lorch has been there since 1991, the Maulbronn monastery followed in 1993.

getting there

By train

  • With the Intercity to Bensheim. Good to know: Bensheim train station now has elevators (to be found at the southern ends of the platform).
  • Then with the Nibelungenbahn (route R63 Worms - Bensheim) to Lorsch train station (journey time from Bensheim approx. 5 minutes). From the train station it is approx. 800 m south along Bahnhofstrasse to the market square.

By bicycle

Shortest distance from Bensheim train station: 6 km, via Hess. Long distance cycle route R9: 7 km
Distance from Worms train station: 18 km, from Bürstadt train station: 9 km

In the street

  • Two motorways lead past Lorsch. On the A67 Darmstadt - Mannheim autobahn, take the Lorsch junction; on the A5 autobahn, the Bensheim / Lorsch exit is the right choice.

The route starts on the former Lorsch Monasterywhich was a European center of culture in the early Middle Ages. A special gem is the so-called "King's Hall", which is one of the best preserved buildings from the Carolingian era.
