Lorsch is a residential town with a world cultural heritage in southern Hesse reed.

Many people probably know Lorsch as a junction from the A67 before heading into the traffic jam Darmstadt device. But it is not only worthwhile to leave and visit the city. The world cultural heritage of the monastery and the market square with (ice) cafés invite you to take a break.

background

Lorsch Monastery in the Topographia Hassiae of Matthäus Merian 1655 (view from the southeast. The monastery wall in the front of the picture is still intact. In front of it is the fairground today, which is also used as a parking lot.

The Königshalle is the most beautiful "remnant" of the former imperial monastery in Lorsch.

The Lorsch Monastery was founded in 764 (as Altenmünster Monastery on the Weschnitz). A few years later, the current facility was built on the dunes. The gate hall was probably part of a triumphal path into the monastery church. The representative building (the King's Hall) was built around the year 900 in the Carolingian style.

Today only small parts of the formerly extensive monastery complex are preserved. Next to the gate hall there is a small remnant of the once very large monastery church. Remnants of the monastery wall are also still preserved.
