background

As a city, Speyer can look back on a long history. Originally founded as a Roman settlement on the Rhine, Speyer achieved great prosperity and wealth as a free imperial city in the Holy Roman Empire. It came to an abrupt end when Speyer burned down completely as part of the War of the Palatinate Succession. After a long decline, Speyer became the capital of the Bavarian Rhine Palatinate and was able to build on old times. Speyer survived the Second World War without major damage.

Although Speyer is no longer a capital today and has also been overtaken by other cities in terms of population development, the city is still the cultural and political center of the Palatinate and also benefits from its proximity to the Rhine-Neckar conurbation. The Speyer Cathedral, the historic old town with its numerous churches and secular buildings as well as the range of museums (especially the Speyer Technology Museum) attract thousands of visitors.
