Frankfurt Airport - Flughafen Frankfurt am Main

Frankfurt Airport

The Frankfurt Airport (also Frankfurt Airport or Rhein-Main-Airport) is the largest German airport and, in terms of passenger volume, the third largest airport in Europe. It is located southwest of Frankfurt am Main.

background

Skyline

The airport consists of two terminals that are connected by a driverless free shuttle system (SkyLine). Air traffic is handled via two runways and a third runway and, since October 2011, another runway.

The construction of another runway in the north was carried out amid violent protests in 2009. A third terminal in the south is under construction. The expansion of Terminal 1 to the west with Pier A-Plus has already been completed, increasing the annual capacity from 58 million to 64 million passengers.

Night flights: According to a ruling by the Federal Administrative Court in April 2012, night flights between 11 p.m. and 5 a.m. at Frankfurt Airport are generally not permitted. The reason given by the court was that the airport operator Fraport had promised the State of Hesse to forego night flights in Frankfurt in order to keep resistance to the expansion of Frankfurt airport low. After that, the state of Hesse had nevertheless approved night flights. For passengers, this rule leads to the cancellation of correspondingly delayed departures (with postponement to the next morning) and in some cases an evasion of arriving flights at airports such as Nuremberg or Leipzig without a night flight ban and a subsequent bus transfer. These circumstances can mean that hotels close to the airport are quickly booked out at night or that capacities are available even though beds are available.

getting there

As the airport has excellent rail connections and parking is relatively expensive, it is advisable to travel by train. For those traveling from greater distances, there is Rail & Fly or with the Lufthansa AIRail, where the train is included in the flight ticket.

By train

Long-distance train station with ICE 3

Before the Terminal 1 There are two train stations, the long-distance train station between the motorway and the B 43 expressway under the spaceship-like office building "The Squaire" and the underground regional train station under Terminal 1.

in the Long-distance train station (Tracks 4 to 7) all IC and ICE trains in the direction of Cologne and many ICE trains in other directions as well as the line stop RB 58. So is for example Cologne in 58 minutes or Stuttgart reachable in 75 minutes. Terminal 1 is connected to escalators and catwalks by a long walk.

The following direct connections exist in long-distance transport: Basel, Vienna, Munich above Stuttgart as well as Nuremberg, Dresden above Leipzig, Hamburg, Amsterdam, Brussels, Cologne above Limburg as well as Koblenz. Not all trains that arrive at the airport reach the main train station, but some do Frankfurt-Süd.

in the Regional train station The following railway lines stop (tracks 1 to 3):

  • RE 2 (Frankfurt (M) Hbf - Frankfurt (M) Niederrad - Mainz Hbf - Bingen (Rhein) Hbf - Boppard Hbf - Koblenz Hbf)
  • RE 3 (Frankfurt Hbf - Frankfurt Airport - Mainz Hbf - St. Wendel - Saarbrücken Hbf)
  • S 8 (Hanau - Offenbach - Frankfurt (M) Konstablerwache - Frankfurt Hbf - Frankfurt Airport - Frankfurt (M) Stadium - Mainz Hbf - Wiesbaden Hbf)
  • S 9 (Hanau - Offenbach - Frankfurt (M) Konstablerwache - Frankfurt Hbf - Frankfurt Stadion - Wiesbaden Hbf)
  • RB 31 (Kirchheimbolanden - Alzey - Mainz - Rüsselsheim - Frankfurt (Main) Airport - Frankfurt Hbf)
  • RE 59 (Frankfurt (M) Airport - Frankfurt (Main) Süd - Hanau Hbf)

It should be noted that in the RMV transport association, the airport Not belongs to the Frankfurt tariff area (zone 5000), but has its own zone (zone 5090). As a result, the ticket to Frankfurt, Mainz or Wiesbaden costs € 4.90, a day ticket for the city area including the airport costs € 9.55. The situation is different with weekly, monthly or annual tickets for the Frankfurt metropolitan area: these are also valid for the airport at no extra charge. The Frankfurt Card and the HessenTicket are also valid in the entire city area, including the airport. (1.1.2015). It is automatically canceled.

With public transport to the airport train stations: down and back

The Terminal 2 is only accessible by rail from Terminal 1 with the free one Connection line skyline reachable. The platforms are on the 1st floor of the reception halls.

When should you be at the airport?

It is always unclear when to be at the airport before the flight. For an intra-European flight, the following times can be assumed (from the entrance to the car park):

  1. 10 minutes from the parking garage to the airport terminal
  2. 15 minutes to check in and drop off your suitcase
  3. 10 minutes for the way in the airport
  4. up to 30 minutes for the security check
  5. 20 minutes before departure at the gate
This gives you a time of around 1.5 hours, which should be taken into account. If you do not want to check in luggage and have already checked in online, you can deduct about 20 minutes. For intercontinental flights, however, earlier check-in times sometimes apply, so you should plan on half an hour more here. For flights to the US and Israel should at least an additional hour should be scheduled due to the safety regulations. In addition, it is always advisable to plan a buffer for traffic jams or other unforeseen events

Line 58 runs from Frankfurt (Main) Höchst train station to the airport terminal 1 bus station. It also passes two other stops on the airport site, Lufthansa Aviation Center and Lufthansa Basis. Line 61 runs from Frankfurt (Main) Süd train station to the airport and serves both terminals.

Two run at night Night bus routes from Frankfurt to the airport: the n7 and the n81. The n81 is faster because it goes directly to the airport without any intermediate stops, but it does not offer a train connection. The n7 stops at the Südbahnhof on the way, but is very slow because it drives across Frankfurt. The night buses are also available with the introduction of night trips S 8 still attractive because some of these do not go through the S-Bahn tunnel.

It is also necessary to buy a ticket for journeys with these buses within the airport area, as these are a public means of transport operated by the local public transport company traffiq.

Nearby is the Frankfurter Kreuz, where the A3 get on with the north-south highway A5 (Kassel - Basel) crosses. This means that the airport can be easily reached from all directions. This advantageous location can, however, be a disadvantage during rush hour traffic, as the journey times can then no longer be planned.

The departure and arrival areas have separate entrances, but are clearly signposted.

The following addresses or coordinates are helpful for navigation systems:

Change

When changing trains in Frankfurt you have to note that you may have to change the terminal. Work

security

As usual for an international airport, there is extensive protection by the police. In Germany, the Federal Police is the one for them Aviation security Competent authority and contact person for the passenger in matters of aviation security. For this purpose, a separate Federal Police Directorate was set up for Frankfurt / Main Airport (the Federal Police has a total of nine directorates). It ensures that at Frankfurt / Main Airport all pieces of baggage that are checked in as travel baggage, hand baggage and all passengers are subjected to an aviation security check. The EU standard applies here, in which all EU member states have undertaken to carry out these aviation security checks according to a uniform standard.

In practice, this means that all items of luggage are x-rayed. If dangerous objects are found in the luggage, the luggage is also opened and the dangerous object is removed. You will then find a form in your suitcase at the destination airport. Every passenger has to pass the air security check if he wants to enter the waiting rooms. The European standard also applies here. First the boarding passes are checked, then you put your hand luggage and the items you have carried with you in plastic tubs. Jackets, watches, wallets, cell phones and hand luggage are screened and, if necessary, searched again by hand.

In addition, the federal police are responsible for passport control. If you come from a destination or want to go to a destination that is outside the Schengen signatory states, you have to go through passport control. There are many pilot projects at Frankfurt / Main Airport to simplify this process. Fingerprints, iris scans or biometric data in the passport are a keyword, but there are still pilot projects at the moment.

The State Police of Hesse is responsible for offenses that are committed outside the scope of the Federal Police. It is of course also on site at Frankfurt Airport. Thefts, insults, etc. are best reported to the state police, because they are then also the competent authority. This avoids possible friction losses between the two authorities. If you are in a hurry, every police officer, whether responsible or not, has to take the report.

health

At the airport you will find an airport clinic, pharmacies, dentists and opticians, so that health care is guaranteed.
