Limburg is the district town in the district of Limburg-Weilburg in Hesse. The city is best known for its Dom and the picturesque half-timbered old town. The city is in the immediate vicinity of Rhineland-Palatinate city Diez and forms a double center with this.

Limburg has good transport links. Via the autobahn A3 one reaches the city from direction Cologne and Frankfurt am Main. The B49 from Gießen / Wetzlar has no through-town roads and is partially 4-lane.

The environmental zone has been in effect in Limburg city center since 2018. The outer districts (Staffel, Linter, Lindenholzhausen, Eschhofen and Ahlbach) are excluded from the environmental zone. The environmental zone is controlled (even in flowing traffic!), Violations are punished.

It has seven towers. Limburg is the seat of a bishopric.   • 2 Gothic house Romans 2-4-6 is a national monument. It was built in 1289 in the style of a Gothic hall house. After extensive research with the confirmation of findings, the house was restored and reopened in 1989. During the restoration, two alterations from 1581-1583 and around 1610 were documented.
  • 3 House Brückengasse 9 represents the seven vices. It was built in 1567. The figures carved into the beam heads represent courtship, avarice, envy, unchastity, intemperance, anger and indolence (from right to left).
  • 4 Little Rütsche House 4 was built in 1289 and completely rebuilt in 1670. It stands at the narrowest point of the city passage on the old Flanders - Byzantium trade route.
  • The 5 Old Collegiate Vicarie at Domplatz 7 was built around 1515 within the old castle complex. It was the Burgmannenhaus of the Lords of Staffel. At the front gable there is a beautiful bay window with posts and arches over a console stone and an octagonal half-timbered stair tower on the side.
  • 6 House fish market 16/17 was probably built in the 15th century and later divided under the ridge. In the 18th century a mezzanine was built into the hall. During the restoration, the original character of the house was restored.
  • The 7 House Römer 1 is a typical Burgmannenhof. Its northern part was built in 1296 and its southern part around 1500. The stair tower and the gallery were added as part of the restoration. Today it is used as a spacious residential building.

Lahnbrücke and Lahnufer

The Lahnufer with the Old Lahn Bridge from which you have a beautiful view of the cathedral. This first stone bridge was built in 1315-1354, but was partially destroyed in 1945 and widened and rebuilt in 1946-47. Below the cathedral there is a high board with the high water levels. Whiskey fair, 17.-18. May 2014
The fair, popular with whiskey connoisseurs, offers, among other things. Tastings, lectures and music. It takes place in the town hall and in front of it on Europaplatz.

Old town festival, June 27. until June 29, 2014
The old town festival has been taking place every year for almost 40 years. In the entire old town from the Kornmarkt over the Plötze to the cathedral there are 7 stages with dance and music and of course food and drink. Please note: the old town is completely cordoned off, entrance fee 2.50 euros.

Rheingau Wine Days, 24.-27. July 2014
This event focuses on the pedestrian zone (Werner-Senger-Straße) and Europaplatz. Rheingau winegrowers are guests in Limburg and present up to 350 types of wine and sparkling wine. The Rheingau Wine Days in Limburg are the largest Rheingau wine festival outside of the Rheingau.

This event takes place on the Neumarkt, which is completely filled with beach sand especially for this purpose. There are volleyball and soccer tournaments, a swimming pool for children as well as cocktails and lounge chairs. Music events take place on the stage in the evenings.

The annual Limburg flea market extends over 3km from the train station to the old town. Up to 650 vendors sell their junk there. The city is really very, very crowded on this day and some streets are closed.

Limburg Oktoberfest, 16. – 21. October 2014
The Limburg Oktoberfest is the largest folk festival in Central Hesse and has over 50,000 visitors annually. It takes place annually on the 1.5 hectare market square (Ste.-Foy-Straße) in Limburg an der Lahn. Open until 2:00 a.m. on weekends.

Christmas market, 28.11.–29.12. 2014
The Limburg Christmas Market stretches from Neumarkt to the old town. In addition to hot food and drinks, there are of course other classic Christmas market goods. There is also a children's carousel. The market closes at 8:00 p.m.

The main shopping mile is the pedestrian zone in the city center (Karstadt, Thalia, H&M, C&A etc.), the pretty little shops can be found in the nearby old town.

The shopping center has been near the train station since 2009 WERKStadt. It is located in the former railway repair hall.
