Bad Ems is a spa town with 15 thermal and medicinal springs in the lower Lahn valley between Westerwald and Taunus not far from the Rhine and is located in the state Rhineland-Palatinate.

Ems was one of the most famous seaside resorts in Germany in the 17th and 18th centuries. In the 19th century the place experienced its heyday as a "world bath" and summer residence of numerous European monarchs and artists. Representative here are: Tsar Alexander II (Russia), King George IV (England), Queen Amalie v. Greece, Jacques Offenbach, Fyodor Dostojewski, Richard Wagner and of course Johann Wolfgang von Goethe.
