Limes cycle path - Limes-Radweg

The Limes cycle path leads along the former Roman border fortifications from the Middle Rhine, over the Taunus to southern Germany to the Danube. The route is very mountainous, as the builders of the Limes naturally did not take cyclists into account.

The demanding cycle route begins in Bad Hönningen on the Rhine. From here it goes over the Westerwald and Taunus in the Wetterau. At Seligenstadt im Rhine Main Area the Main is reached.

To Miltenberg The route now follows the Main, which the Romans used as a natural border. From Miltenberg it's getting mountainous again. About the Building land, the Swabian-Franconian Forest and the Franconian Alb eventually becomes the Danube southeast of Kelheim reached (end of the Limes). In regensburg the bike path ends.

A well-known monument on the Limes is the reconstructed one Saalburg Castle

Route profile

  • Length: approx. 800 km
  • Signposting: present, but the signs are quite small or not present at all. Since the quality of the signs is sometimes very poor, you risk getting lost without cycling literature.
  • Slopes: Many, partly very demanding, slopes in the low mountain ranges.
  • Path condition: changeable - especially in the low mountain ranges on longer stretches bad surfaces; In some cases the route also follows the Limes hiking trail.
  • Traffic load: The cycle route mostly leads away from the car traffic. But you have to watch out for hikers, as the bike route often runs on hiking trails.
  • Suitable bike: It is best to have a MTB or a touring bike with gearshifts suitable for mountains and a lot of profile on the tires.
  • Family suitability: No - because of the many inclines in the low mountain ranges and poor road surfaces. If you want to cycle the route with children, you have to start with very short stages (20 km are often sufficient) and should be able to trust that the children are capable of stress, possibly persistent in pushing and are frustration-tolerant ...
  • Inline suitability: Is partially in the main valley between Aschaffenburg and Miltenberg given.
