Wülzburg fortress

  • 20  Wülzburg. Tel.: 49 9141 907-124. Wülzburg in the encyclopedia WikipediaWülzburg in the media directory Wikimedia CommonsWülzburg (Q49584) in the Wikidata database. The Ansbach Hohenzollern Fortress Wülzburg is one of the top attractions in Weißenburg. It is located on the 643.8 meter high Wülzburger Berg and was originally a Benedictine monastery, which was founded in 1588 under Margrave Georg Friedrich the Elder. Ä. by Brandenburg-Ansbach was converted into a fortress. In addition to the Jülich Citadel (1549) and the Spandau Citadel (1560), the Wülzburg is one of the three closely related fortresses that have been preserved in German-speaking countries. In a one-time sequence, they illustrate the typical Renaissance fortifications. From 17th to 19th In the 19th century, the fortress served as a state prison, where, among other things, the great Franconian gang of thieves and robbers was held. In 1806 the Wülzburg fell to the Kingdom of Bavaria. The Bavarian War Ministry had extensive renovations carried out so that the fortress could be used by the army. In 1882 the city of Weißenburg bought almost the entire fortress. During the First World War, the Wülzburg was used as a prisoner of war camp, in which the future French President Charles de Gaulle was imprisoned in 1918. In 1929 Bavaria's first school camp was opened on the Wülzburg. During the Second World War, Wülzburg was an internment camp where 40 Soviet soldiers and the famous Czech composer Erwin Schulhoff died. They were buried in the fall garden below the fortress in the so-called Russian cemetery. After the Second World War, the Wülzburg became a mass refugee camp with tens of thousands of residents. As a very well-preserved Renaissance fortress, the Wülzburg offers many prime examples of the architecture of the time, with crazy names such as casemates, glacis and covered path. At 143.2 m, the deep well in the west wing is one of the deepest wells in Germany. It was laid out around the year 1600 and, as a top product of engineering, has a proud diameter of 2.5 m. The St. Nikolaus Palace Chapel was built in 1605 and, with just under 20 church members, is the smallest parish in Bavaria. This and much more motivated the Bavarian Monument Office to give the Wülzburg the status of a nationally significant architectural monument in 1968, which puts the fortress on the same level as the Wieskirche or Neuschwanstein Castle brings.Open: Opening times: Inner courtyard and protective moat accessible free of charge at any time during the day; Guided tours for groups by appointment.
