Pappenheim is a small town in Bavarian district Middle Franconia and lies in Altmuehltal Nature Park.

background

Count Pappenheim

"I know what to expect from that lot" - This saying is derived from a quote from Friedrich Schiller's drama Wallenstein's death in which General Wallenstein says about the cuirassiers who report to General Gottfried Heinrich Graf zu Pappenheim: "This is how I recognize my Pappenheimers". At that time this saying was something recognizable, today it was something derogatory, for example in the sense of "rascal".

From around 1100 until the fall of the Holy Roman Empire in 1806, the noble family von Pappenheim held the important office of imperial hereditary marshals. In purely titular terms, the Electors of Saxony were the arch marshals, but they did not carry out the associated tasks themselves, but delegated them to the Pappenheimers: this included carrying the imperial sword and riding a horse in a pile of oats during the coronation of kings and emperors the animal had to reach up to the belly. This symbolized that there was always enough food available in the imperial stables.

getting there

By train

The 1 Pappenheim station, on the outskirts of the small town, is on the railway line TreuchtlingenIngolstadt (Altmühlbahn). Regional trains stop here every hour from Munich (travel time 1:45 hours) via Ingolstadt (45 minutes) and from Treuchtlingen (5 minutes), and every two hours directly from Nuremberg (a good one hour). The closest regular ICE train station is Ingolstadt, and there are a few long-distance trains stopping in Treuchtlingen.

In the street

Pappenheim is on the state road from Treuchtlingen to Eichstätt, which always meanders along the Altmühl. About 5 km west of Pappenheim there is a connection to the federal highway B2 (Nuremberg – Augsburg). The closest motorway junction is Altmuehltal on the A9 (Nuremberg – Munich).

By bicycle

Pappenheim is right on Altmühltal cycle path, 8 km downstream from Treuchtlingen, 33 km from Gunzenhausen, or 36 km upstream from Eichstätt.
