Treuchtlingen is a city in Middle Franconia in the nature park Altmuehltal.

background

There are traces of Roman and Celtic settlement in the area. The one in Ptolemy ’ Geographia Recorded location from the 2nd century AD Setouakoton could have been in the place of Treuchtlingen.

The European main watershed runs through the municipality of Treuchtlingen: The Swabian Rezat flows to the Rhine and thus to the North Sea; the Altmühl flows into the Danube, which flows into the Black Sea. As early as the time of Charlemagne, at the end of the 8th century, there was an attempt to connect these with a canal. This Karlsgraben can still be seen today; whether it was ever navigable is not entirely certain.

The Upper Veste was built in the 12th century. Around 1400 Treuchtlingen received market rights. From the middle of the 15th century, the place belonged to a branch line of the Counts of Pappenheim. Gottfried Heinrich Graf zu Pappenheim was born in Treuchtlingen on May 29, 1594. He was Marshal in the Thirty Years' War and the quote from Friedrich Schiller's refers to the cuirassiers he commands Wallenstein's death, "That's how I recognize my Pappenheimer".

After the Thirty Years' War, the place fell to the Margraviate of Ansbach in 1647. It has belonged to Bavaria since 1809. As the junction of the routes from Munich / Ingolstadt, Nuremberg, Würzburg and Augsburg, Treuchtlingen played an important role in the Bavarian railway network from the end of the 19th century. The Franconian, Bavarian and Swabian dialect areas also meet in Treuchtlingen - the so-called "three-tribal corner".

The following previously independent communities were incorporated into Treuchtlingen in the 1970s:

  • 10 Carolina fossaFossa Carolina in the Wikipedia encyclopediaFossa Carolina in the Wikimedia Commons media directoryFossa Carolina (Q566411) in the Wikidata database, also Karlsgraben called, was a projected water connection between the Altmühl and the Swabian Rezat (a source river of the Rednitz, which leads into the Main), across the European main watershed, and thus a forerunner of the Main-Danube Canal, which was realized over 1000 years later. In 793, Emperor Charlemagne had an approximately 3000 m long canal excavated near today's district of Graben (approx. 3 km north of the town center of Treuchtlingen). However, the work turned out to be very difficult. It is possible that the canal actually went into operation for a few years, but was then abandoned because of too much effort. What has remained is the ditch, lined with earth walls up to 10 meters high, which is still filled with water over a length of 500 meters today. A Information center (Hüttinger-Scheune, Karlsgrabenstrasse) provides information on the history with an exhibition (open from the end of April to mid-October: Wed-Sun 2–5 p.m., admission € 1.50). 750 meters further north, a well marks the main European watershed. Its two jets of water flow in different directions: one in the Swabian Rezat and thus over the Main and Rhine into the North Sea, the other into the Altmühl and thus over the Danube into the Black Sea. However, it is out of order (as of August 2017).
