Ansbach is a former royal seat and seat of the government of Middle Franconia in Bavaria.

background

The history of Ansbach begins with the foundation of a Benedictine monastery in 748. The name - in the local dialect Attach spoken - is derived from the Onolzbach, which flows here. In 1221, Ansbach was first mentioned as a town.

In 1331 Ansbach came into the possession of the then burgrave of Nuremberg, who belonged to the Hohenzollern dynasty (long before they also took over the rule in the Mark Brandenburg). In 1363 the construction of a moated castle began as a forerunner of the later residence. From 1385 Ansbach was the seat of the “lower mountain” part of the Burgraviate of Nuremberg, from which the Principality of Ansbach or Margraviate Brandenburg-Ansbach developed. Geographically, Ansbach is far from Brandenburg, but the two countries were under the rule of the same dynasty. Ansbach was linked to the Margraviate of Brandenburg-Bayreuth several times in personal union (i.e. both had the same prince), but it always remained independent under constitutional law. From 1528 Margrave Georg introduced the Reformation, to this day the population of Ansbach is predominantly Protestant.

Ansbach experienced its heyday in the baroque and rococo period (first half of the 18th century), when the residence was rebuilt in its form that has been preserved to this day, the courtyard garden was designed and a large part of the historical buildings of today's old town were built. The Ansbach-Bayreuth Dragoons, who served in the armies of Frederick the Great of Brandenburg-Prussia and played a decisive role in the Battle of Hohenfriedberg in 1745, are in the Hohenfriedberger March sung about ("Up, Ansbach-Dragoons! Up, Ansbach-Bayreuth!"). It was not until 1806 that Ansbach came to the Kingdom of Bavaria as a result of the Reichsdeputationshauptschluss. Ansbach has been the administrative seat of the Bavarian administrative district of Middle Franconia since 1838.

An important historical figure in Ansbach is the legendary foundling Kaspar Hauser, who lived here from 1831 to 1833, was allegedly murdered in the Hofgarten (according to another opinion, he fatally injured himself) and is buried in the Ansbach city cemetery.

In the street

  • Coming from the north and south: via federal highway 13 WurzburgMunich or via the A7 (Würzburg – Ulm) and change to the A6 at the Feuchtwangen / Crailsheim junction

The old town is largely a pedestrian zone, and there are only a few parking spaces in the immediate vicinity, which are usually limited in time or are quite expensive if parking for several hours. It is therefore advisable to leave the car a little further outside, e.g. B. on 4 Exhibition center / Schalkhäuser Strasse (400 seats; no time limit; free of charge; approx. 1 km west of the old town, 10–15 minutes on foot or 3 minutes with bus routes 731/751), at the 5 Hofwiese / Onoldia conference center (350 spaces; maximum parking time 10 hours; 0.30 € / hour; 100 m to the orangery / courtyard garden, 300 m to the residence) or in 6 Parking garage train station (538 spaces; maximum parking time 30 days; € 1.50 per 24 hours; 750 m to the old town).

By bicycle

The Burgenstraße cycle path runs through Ansbach and leads here from Rothenburg ob der Tauber in one direction (41 km) and Roth bei Nürnberg in the other direction (53 km).

Ansbach is also not far from Altmühltal cycle path away, so that a detour is easily possible from here. For example, it is from Herrieden on the Altmühl only 13 km to Ansbach, although a clearly noticeable ridge (almost 100 m ascent) has to be overcome. The cycle route from Herrieden to Ansbach is well signposted and leads mainly on roads with little traffic, some of which also have separate cycle paths. You can go back to the Altmühl at Ornbau, 17 km south of Ansbach.

mobility

Map of Ansbach

The Ansbacher A-bus network is part of the Transport association for the greater Nuremberg area (VGN).

The historic old town of Ansbach measures less than a kilometer from one end to the other, and the residential ensemble, including the courtyard garden, is directly adjacent. All important sights are therefore within walking distance of each other.

Tourist Attractions

Overall, Ansbach has a well-kept old town that is well worth seeing.
