By train

Rothenburg is in the tariff area of the transport network for the greater Nuremberg area VGN.

By bus

  • Romantic Road Bus: From April to October the bus runs from Frankfurt main station to Füssen and back. The buses start at eight in the morning at the end of the line and arrive at the other end at eight. The buses stop in Rothenburg 2 Schrannenplatz (45-minute stop) and at the train station. Bicycles can also be taken on reservation.

With a tour group

Rothenburg is a popular destination for bus trips. An easy way to stroll through the city for a day. However, the offers are mainly aimed at older travelers.

In the street

  • Easily accessible via the motorway A7 Würzburg-Ulm or Ulm-Würzburg Symbol: AS 108 Rothenburg ob der Tauber
  • The Castle Road leads through the place. She comes from the southwest Kirchberg an der Jagst and then continues to the east Colmberg.
  • Furthermore, the city lies on the Romantic road, one of the most popular holiday routes in Germany, located in the northwest of the city Tauberfranken Coming through the Taubertal and leads in the south to the Frankenhöhe, in the direction of Schillingsfürst.

The historic city center is only partially accessible by car. The parking spaces are very limited and some of them can only be used temporarily. However, there are five large parking spaces, some of which are chargeable, outside the city wall (3 P1, 4 P2, 5 P3, 6 P4, 7 P5), from where you can walk to the market square, the city center, within ten minutes. The parking spaces are signposted on the larger roads at the entrance to the village.

By bicycle

Rothenburg is on the following cycle paths:

mobility

In Rothenburg's old town, within the city wall, the best way to get around is on foot or by bike. Parking spaces and the train station are not far away.

In the street

Due to the winding streets and the many one-way streets, it is not easy to find your way around the old town by car. Since you can only pass the city wall through city gates, there is a height limit. Within the city wall, there is either a speed limit of 20 km / h or there are play streets. The parking spaces in the old town and on the large parking lots are chargeable between 9 a.m. and 6 p.m. and are severely limited in the city center (pay attention to the white markings on play streets!). Many parking spaces are reserved for residents. In the inner city area, around the market square, there is a night driving ban from 7 p.m. to 6 a.m. for non-residents.
The easiest way is to park in one of the five large parking lots outside the city wall and walk into the city. All information about parking can be found at www.parken-rothenburg.de.

By bicycle

The cobblestones and the inclines in the old town make cycling a bit tiring. Since most of the one-way streets in the city center are passable in both directions for cyclists, you can get everywhere quickly. The pedestrian zone (Hafengasse) and other pedestrian paths are so short that you can push through there quickly. So far there are only a few bike racks in the old town, so you have to be creative when parking.

bus and train

Rothenburg is too small for buses and trains. The train station with connection to the Ansbach-Würzburg line is approx. 20 minutes' walk from the city center.

You will look in vain for castles and palaces in Rothenburg. The castle that once stood where the park is today Old castle was destroyed in the 14th century. The whole city, with its city walls, functioned as a large fortification, but the rich citizens of the city had real palaces built for themselves in the late Middle Ages. Today you can still see these town houses e.g. in Herrngasse, west of the market square. The closer you get to the market place, the higher the houses become. With some houses you can peek into the back yard and look at the dimensions of the buildings.

It is based on an alleged incident from the Thirty Years' War: When Tilly's troops conquered the city on October 30, 1631, the looting was waived.
